Thanks, I've been looking for that little 1/4" drive deep-socket craftsman set in the little case for a while. Hopefully it won't go too high. The current sets are just regular sockets with an extension in a much bigger case. I loved these old little cases (both SAE & Metric) because they were compact and had the deep sockets, very useful to "grab & go" for little things...

this is a really nice ratchet. it is amazingly thin, but seems strong enough with use. i first got introduced to these from a listing that four.cycle put up for a pawn shop selling a box of five 3425's (3/8" drive). Super Sport picked them up (i assume offering less of a low ball figure than i did for the "or best offer"), and was generous enough to let me buy one off him. a week or so ago, i picked up a 4490 like this for not much more than this listing.

the seller's name looks familiar, but he does not appear in my purchase history back through 2016, so i dont think i have bought anything from them.

You're likely thinking of the ones Cripe Distributing was selling for $39. They sold out sometime in December. A few resellers have them listed now for jacked up prices.

I picked one up from Cripe. Very nice ratchet. It's a shame they're shutting down Armstrong.

so, what makes a ratchet "fine tooth"? i have seen the "ubiquitous 72 tooth taiwan internals" referred to as fine tooth, but what is the bottom? are 45 tooth ratchets considered fine tooth?

From a 2011 thread that I was reading recently:

<a name="fine.tooth"></a>Fine tooth: There is much debate as to what 'fine-tooth' equates too. A general idea is that there are more teeth per degree of movement of the ratchet than standard ratchets have. (i.e. A standard Craftsman 3/8" ratchet has 36 teeth, a fine tooth has 41 teeth with dual pawls. Making it an effective 82 teeth) Fine-tooth ratchets are often found in a round-head style due to a different mechanism layout than.

<a name="rhft"></a>RHFT:Stands for Round-Head Fine-tooth. This means the head of the ratchet is round and the tooth count (density) is higher than a a normal ratchet. Therefore, there is a smaller 'arc' needed for the ratchet to engage.

Based on this, I think a truly non-fine-tooth ratchet would have to have something under 30 teeth.

But then, there should probably be a term for ratchets with 72+ teeth, vs 36 or 45.

^ It is admittedly a loosely-used term that generally includes most anything above about a 30-tooth mechanism.
Users of the newer 80 or 120-tooth models don't always consider an older 40-tooth model a "RHFT".
I suppose part of it depends upon one's own perspective; if you grew up using an old clunky CM pear-head, a 36-tooth ratchet is quite a step up.

I would agree with you on that, but I don't believe there's anything even close to a consensus.
