Ebay prices?

Is it common for ebay sellars to want more than new price for items? Browsing through the tools and saw a Matco 3/8 long handle, not flex, 88 tooth, buy it now $200. Thought that was high, looked up the new price which is $110. I know it dosen't hurt to ask, but a $90 increase over new??

If its the one i seen, I think he made a mistake when he listed his item. He claims this Set is well used etc.. Well its only 1 Ratchet and he has tons of other stuff listed that isnt as "off the wall" priced.

On a Side Note.. its not uncommon for people to list items for more than they cost new, Especially on Limited Run, Specialty items etc...

yep happens all the time. I find most of the sellers that do that are either selling collectors items, tools that aren't in production any more, or they ship world wide which gives them a market in countries where that brand of tools isn't easily accessible or where the retail cost of that tool is significantly higher than North American retail.

try this one on for size. This seller only ships to the US but it's an out of production set AFAIK. More power to him if it sells but most wouldn't pay more than a small fraction of that price.

It is very common. You have to really know what you are bidding on.

But occasionally you will come across a great deal.

Is it common? Of course! I used to do it all the time, though not with tools. Get a size or an in demand item...supply and demand. Quite simple really.

Unfortunately Ebay has eliminated listing fees. Anyone can list anything for any price and wait forever for some idiot to bite.

It was better when there were listing fees and lower final value fees. It helped keep some of this overpriced **** from continuing to flood Ebay.

The possibility of it being aimed at an overseas market didn't occur to me. Not in the market anyway, but I try to buy locally IF possible. Saves on gas, frustration, scams, but sometimes not as much fun.

I think it is the competitive mindset folks have- like- ---"I do not care the cost- I am going to WIN this (fill in blank)". Forget shipping $$ and the fact that I can get it new at Grainger for less.

I experienced this at my local flea market this past weekend. Lots of guys were selling tools and asking close to retail or at retail prices. Those guys are there to make a living at the flea market so now I will avoid them all together.

I go to flea markets for bargains not retail prices. Same with ebay you have guys selling to make a living you need to avoid them. When you see the "NOS" you know they are in business of selling tools. A regular joe selling his old tools is not going to put "NOS" in his listings.

I decided to buy tools from yard sales because those people are not trying to make a living with the stuff they are selling.

Best way to sift where the real buys are from the garbage is to search for "Auctions Only"

Ebay usually has about 10-20% real auctions among the rest of the garbage that has infected the site.

The "Buy It Now" offerings are a sucker's bet..ALWAYS priced too high.

you need to look at newly listed buy it now. I bought a set of near mint mac 'clr' series wrenches last week. Buy it now for 125 or best offer. I offered 100 and won instantly. I know it's not a steal for ten wrenches but a decent deal nonetheless

It happens both ways. What really ticks me off is I get a really good item that I can list at a decent price for both myself and the buyer and somebody sells the same thing for a give away price.

There are alot of people asking very high prices, or even numerous times where auction prices are higher then new, however if you watch closely and bid within your means and price range there are alot of good deals.

I have bought many items at 1/3 to 1/2 of new price. A lot of times if you dont mind minor engravings you can get the item even cheaper as people tend to shy away from them. To me a shiny new tool is not going to make me any more money then one that has initials on it, so I might as well pocket the savings and buy some more tools.

Also there is some good deals on BIN listings.

A couple weeks ago I bought an almost brand new (looks to never had a socket on it) Matco CFR158TG ratchet for $50. I saved over 120 from buying it new. I can't complain and just keep watching and fighting for the deals.

Blame the "________ Extreme Auction Hunters" reality TV genre for that ****. People are stupid, and it only takes one stupid person to bid something too high, and two of them to bid it stupid high. How to attract these people to my own auctions, I have no idea, if I could figure it out I could be a millionaire.

I poke around ebay once in a while for a few items I'm wanting to buy for cheap, there's rarely anything worth biting on. Although it is where I bought my 15" long Matco 3/8" and 8" long 1/4" 88T for $100 shipped. Honestly, I usually look more at BIN than auctions, unless there's an auction I think might go stupid cheap. I stopped even bothering trying to snipe and just throw out a reasonable bid whenever... someone always ends up bidding waaaaaaaaaay more than I'm willing to pay anyway.

I was looking for a leak down tester. Another GJ member told me the OTC unit was a good one. I see it on Amazon new for $56. I decide to check eBay to see what's there. Lots of OTC units, all between $60 and 90. It's one reason I stopped using eBay.

I'll bet the sellers don't even have the tool. If someone buys it, they place an order with Amazon.

I still stand by what I said.

You can wade through hundreds if not thousands of Buy it Nows or go to the auctions and get a better buy for your time spent.

There are few good deals in the BIN section...just check the completed items and see how very few BIN items are sold.

Auctions always sell if the starting price is low.

If you are buying common items like Matco, check out Amazon..much better buys than Ebay.

tell that to my last ebay invoice with hundreds of dollars of insertion fees on it.

yeah, they run specials with no insertion fees, but to say that they are eliminated is incorrect.

What I think is funny are the people on craigslist selling used items at or above retail.
used home depot tile saw $100 used once and they try selling for $100, while claiming it was purchased for $125 a month prior... *sigh* it's on their site stupid!

i came back......one set is gone.......the other?????
