Ebay question about a past sale.

About 2 years ago I sold a vise and the buyer had previously asked me if he could put it on lay-a way and of coarse since that was the "deal sealer" I proceded to accept his 1st of 4 payments. He made 2 payments and its been almost 2 years and since then my hard drive took a **** and I lost all his contact info and Ebay only lets you go back about 18 months. He vanished. Whats your thoughts?
Maybe by posting a photo of this vise someone out there might know who bought it. I'm sure alot of you are that person but I do remember some details so don't mess with the Old Man!

Call ebay customer service and ask for their advice. Or refund him what he or she has payed and relist it.

As far as tracking down the buyer, if they paid you with PayPal, they will have records for you.

How long was the layaway/4 payment plan supposed to take? I would have thrown in the towel WAY before 18 months.

While we are on the subject..........what are you currently asking for the vise? I'm seriously in the market.

I had sold it for $400, free shipping. Unfortunately he didn't have Paypal and gave me 2 business checks for $100. He told me he would send it when he gets it. If I call Ebay, even if they could go farther back in the archives would at the least, want the listing No. which I don't save. The downside is that I can't remember even what month or year I sold it. I went into my vise photo album and those photos of that vise were on the crashed drive and gone.

What Email were you using for discussions? Check your sent mail if you didn't save the Emails.

I AM. Thanks for your effort. That vise I believe I listed as a Union Parker 974. Its been oiled down with a towel over it. I'll give him another year. I just can't be hard on someone that already gave me $200 of his hard earned money.

That is a damn fine looking vice !

Maybe 10 years ago, I sold a saab 9000 for a several hundred on ebay (it was a turd/parts but it ran and drove). Guy came down that Saturday, after he won the auction, and paid in full with cash, I hand him the title, hes going to pick it up the next Saturday.

Long story short, several years pass and the car is still sitting there, I leave emails and voice mails, he never returns any of my communications. Hes got the title, I didnt see this coming.

So I relist on ebay after about 2 years, and I put a short explanation of what happened, and why the car is being sold for parts with no title.

Out of the blue, I get and email from the guy who already won/paid for it. He says to me, "give me the name and address of the winner and I will mail him the title".

Thought that was unexpected and nice ! He did not ask for a dime.

Kind of blew me away, that the guy saw the car on ebay the second time around. He must have been a saab addict. Dont know I ever found out why he did not come and get the car. The second winner, came from 5hrs away to get it !

i sold a set of tires to a guy on ebay for local pickup, he paid and never got them. gave him fair warning and just gave them to a neighbor of mine because he could use them on his truck.

thing that ***** is you have no contact info, but several years is quite a long time, what the heck is the statute of limitations on that. maybe ebay could give you advise and back you if you relist

Resell the vise for $400 and return his $200 if he contacts you in a reasonable amount of time, perhaps 6 months. He certainly has your contact information.

On sent mail, can you access it on the service providers site? how do you use? (I never down load my mail locally. let Yahell and Gmail provide the storage; plus Gmail has great search capability within your Email, which makes finding a lost Email fairly easy...)

With AOL I have an option. I can save mail on my PC or on AOL. I chose to save it on my PC. I guess there's a moral to that story. The Bank ? I don't even want to call them. Ever try getting a human to help you at Harris Bank? I'll wait out this year and give you guys an update.

Strong suggestion: Open a Gmail Email account and have your AOL mail forwarded to it. (you can also setup Gmail to "send as" if you want it to send any Email as your AOL account) but gradually get everyone you know to start using the Gmail.

Gmail allows you to "tag" (not file) Email so the same Email can be tagged "into" a number of "folders", or "sub folders". You can also do the search as I indicated, and they start you with something like 7 gigs of space, and increase it gradually. it also has good filtering capability if you get a lot of mail that you prefer to go directly into a particular tag.

Some companies are starting to use Gmail as their company Email, and between Gmail or the "industry standard" of MS Outlook, I'll take Gmail in an instant.

Yea I do the same thing since I still have my original email from 97 I opened a gmail and use it exclusively. But it sends as my original email so no one would ever know. Also google just upped the storage of basic members to 10 gigs! That's years and years of emails for most people

Move on. If he can't come up the last $200 in 2 years, I'd say consider it a dead deal. You've got no obligation to refund anything if he's gone AWOL. Consider it a "break-up fee". Happens in business all the time when large deals fall through.
