I bought what was advertised as a good condition IR 231c on ebay. When the gun arrived it was in good shape but it's a 231a instead of a 231c. How upset should I be??

A "a" is older than a "c", right? A "c" is likely a redesign and therefore "better". I say contact the seller and see if you can get a partial refund or full refund. If you get the cold shoulder, contact eBay and file a dispute. You will get your money back, including shipping.

Attached are photos, and here's the listing.

I don't know if there is a difference between the A & the C models, but I don't know for sure so I figured I'd ask here first.

I paid $58 with shipping.

I think the C is a bit newer and has more power. If it work good it may pay you to keep it and ask for about 15 dollars back. If he won't do it ask for a full refund more a mistake in listing. Reflect whatever he does in his feedback.

I think I found the manual here. Looks like on Page 3 the working torque range for the 231 is listed at 25-300 lb-ft. The 231C is rated at 25-350 lb-ft at the manufacturer's site here.

At Amazon, on the same page, here, the 231C has two listed max torque numbers: 435 in the gray box on the right in the Product Description section, and 600 lb-ft in the same section at the bottom.

The gun I received looks like it was made in 1996 by the date code of A96G.

I'm going to use mainly for tire rotations so I don't need something with 1100 lb-ft, but I will be using on a car, a large SUV & a minivan.

This is my first impact tool so I don't really know what will work best. I just don't want to waste $60. The two contenders I was deciding between were a 231C & the HF Earthquake 1/2" gun.

If you were me, what would you do?

Those have to be two different guns there. The pic on ebay is more square around IR stamping, the one you posted is more rounded. Air ****** also looks different.

I would be a little pissed. The 231C is a great impact for light/medium use. The thing that gets me most is in his ad he says it retails new for $275. Even if it were the 231C it doesn't cost nearly that brand new. Hell I don't even think I paid that for my 2135Ti and that thing is a beast. I would ask for a partial refund. If he's not willing to do that for posting the BS ad, take it up with ebay.

my 231C has the newer italic "IR" logo, yours has the old interlocked IR logo.

Didn't even notice that. Now I would be even more annoyed by this.

Let him know the gun he sent you is not the gun you bought. Ask for a partial refund ($8-$18), if he doesnt want to, then just return it. and if he refuses, then file the dispute.
Chances are he wont want to mess with the return shipping and hassle of relisting it.

Not the same gun as the photos. Get a refund. A gun that is 14 years old is about at the end of it's life (Mine last 2-3 years) and a new IR231 can be had for about 125.00. Great guns but Air guns are disposable tools in my world. Minor repairs are OK but anything major out of warranty and they get replaced. A bad air gun can really cost you money. If it works good, Id be saving for a new one and using that as a back up. He may have made a mistake and just boxed the wrong one

I didn't even notice that the Ebay photo didn't match the actual gun photos that I posted. Thanks for pointing that out.

I sent the seller this message last night:

Got the package on Saturday, thanks. Question: did my impact get mixed up with another shipment going out at the same time? The item was listed as an Ingersoll-Rand 231C but in the box was a 231A, an older & less powerful model. If you could check and let me know I'd appreciate. Thanks.

Here was the reply this morning:

no Thats the only one I had, and I did not know there was a model 231-a.

I'm going to reply with this today:

OK, thanks. Since the listing was for a 231C, and the actual item is a 231A, we have a case here of the actual item not matching the listing. I'd like to return it for a refund, including return shipping on my end. Where should I plan on sending the gun?

I guess we'll see what he says...

If the gun works well I'd keep it and ask for a partial refund (perhaps the shipping rate). Sounds like the gun will suit your needs and it's in your hands. If you do send it back make sure you get some form of tracking.

Some sellers, me for example, don't like partial refunds, but I also make it explicit in my listings that shipping costs are not refundable.

I bet this seller used some stock photo, handy, but now what a mess.

Even when you ship items that don't match the description?

j/k, of course you wouldn't do that. But that was the situation here.

Got everything refunded today, including shipping both ways. This was an honest seller for sure - I didn't have any problems at all.

It's already been relisted as a 231A.

All's well that ends well, I suppose.
