Haha completely the other way round for me, i have had both sealey, facom and other euro tools and some are great like elota stahlwhile but if I lived in America I wouldn't go out of my way to get them, I went out of my way to pick up some craftsmen industrial wrenchs from eBay pay 50 pounds for 9 wrenches and I don't regret a thing

Yes I'm of the same opinion, I live in Ireland, but I've lived in the USA also, 80% of my tools were purchased in the US, when I visit the US I usually bring home more tools, quality tools are better value in the US in my opinion.

For those of you thinking of buying hand tools on eBay from the UK, my advice would be to avoid sealey and draper, I don't own any, nor do my friends.

Well here in Europe a number of our newer cars use plugs with an M12x1.25 thead and a 12-point 14mm collar. I've been a mechanic since '07 and have encountered spark plugs with 14mm, 16mm, 18mm, 21mm and 22mm collars. They're out there.

Moose-LandTran;
hate to bust your bubble.....

>5/8" hex spark plugs were invented in 1909, they aren't 16mm but it fits

>there are no 21mm plugs they are 13/16" from the 1890's......20.6mm measure them

>22mm plugs? they are 7/8" they came in Model T Fords

in 1924 there where 20 million cars in the World.......10 million were Model T Fords

by May 1927 there were 15 million Model Ts

it took Volkswagen from the mid '30s until '72 to break Henry Ford's production record...... a little slower, you think;)

the ******* that made a M12 x 1.25 threaded plug with a 12 point 14mm drive should be taken out and shot:thumbup:

most new engineers are like male dogs.......they just have to leave their mark on the fire hydrant:lol_hitti

you notice the retards at Hazet have a 10 inside the square for the drive size on the #4766-2?

sorry, 10mm square drive doesn't exist......its 3/8"

what size are the rims on your car or motorcycle?

how about the plumbing in your home? is it in millimeters?:lol_hitti

hey, I'll be the 1st to admit measuring systems based on 12, 16, 36, 5,280 ect are stupid......we got them from England......
what's an inch? 3 grains of wheat or one of which Henry's knuckle joints:lol_hitti

but it got us to the Moon......my Father said "we didn't need the Saturn rocket to get to the Moon, we could have just climbed the stack of money we spent"

Sometimes if you don't make the drive and threads etc different, somebody is going to try and make the wrong part fit.

I bought a bunch of Beta stuff from UK distributors over eBay, even after they started distributing here, they were about half the price!

I've only ever had one issue with shipping from the UK (of probably a dozen different orders from various vendors), which was for bicycle parts. It took about 45 days, and the label was barely readable by the time I got it. Honestly I don't even know how it got to me, because the label was so faded.

My understanding is the UK (and EU in general) have much tighter commerce laws, making online scammers much fewer than in the US.

When I was in love with snap on I used to buy from the US a lot. Hardly paid any taxes, standard procedure was to have one last request after it was all dealt and paid: small value on the customs slip. I can hardly remember any transaction where the seller didn't comply. The threshold is at 18 GBP but in real life they'll let it slip if it's under 30. After that you start paying VAT at 20% of item value + a healthy handling fee.

Nowadays, I only buy speciality items from the us. Not necessarily because they're much more expensive here (unless they're native to the US), but the market itself is much bigger and stuff comes up more often and at better prices. The truth is, for the most part you are spoilt with choice over there. No reason to look over here, other than items that you simply can't find in the US.

The upside is, England is a very cool place for machinery and tooling. Most folks over here hardly have what you would call a workshop and anything above tools for car tinkering is above their heads. You can't swing a cat in most peoples garages, and it's generally used for storing all sorts of sh*t the wife can't be bothered to keep in the house. Therefore, if something like that comes up on ebay you will only be competing with a select few - which means very nice prices. Yes, you do get the model engineer crowd, but they're limited to mini lathes and perhaps a Myford.

And above all, there is no such thing as vise hysteria. You can pick up a monster of old english steel with a little over 40 bucks, as I did.

Note that this is a generalisation, it doesn't apply to everything and anything.

if they can't read what's on the old plug there isn't much that will help them

using standard sizes means you make it with standard tooling which cuts costs:thumbup:

Am I the only one that is pissed off about the U.S. companies having their stuff made over seas for a fraction of what it would cost here, but still charging the U.S. made price for their stuff!!!!! Ken.

Just a heads up to anyone thinking of buying Sealey tools.... The positive is they have
a massively huge range of tools, and for the specialist tools that you use once in a blue
moon they are a good choice.

I have a Sealey compressor and most of my air tools are from them and they have all
held up well and nothing has broken yet. I would guess they are comparable to the
Harbour Freight Pitsburgh Pro line.

Now, the thing to watch out for is they have two tier's of tools, Their budget range
which is called Siegen and their "Top" line which is called Sealey Premier. Allot of eBay
sellers are sneaky and list their items as say "Sealey combination spanners" When they
are really Siegen.

The Siegen stuff is really low quality, probably be ok if you only look at them gentley, but
at the minimum you want the Sealey Premier stuff, which to be honest, even though the
stuff I have is fine and works ok, is only middle of the road stuff... A fair ways from "Premier"
but more than acceptable for a DIYer... Lifetime warranty too and the company is
superb to deal with, from personal exprience when I wanted to buy some spare parts.

The price though, is really good on some tools and definitely worth a look....
However, if I were in the USA, I would look no further than the Pro stuff from
Harbour Freight.... I would be willing to bet that allot of it, especially the
specialist tools, is the same stuff.

The key to determine if it's Sealey Siegen or Sealey Premier are the model numbers...
Anything that starts with "SO" is Siegen and anything that starts with "AK" is from their
Premier range and really the only range worth a look.

Cheers...
Bump and THANKS. You may have just saved my old ***.
I was looking at a set with the " other guy has the same one for % less money" attitude. SO#
NOT AK.

That will be because Europe is very strict on weights and measures being sold as metric even if they are still imperial amounts, its stupid. Wheels are one of the few things still listed in inches, they did try to force metric on us but failed, plumbing is all in mm equivalents as well, 15 & 22 pipes, 32 & 38 wastes etc.

There are lots of things still listed in Imperial. Bicycle headsets for example.
Road signs in miles. The Germans use English shoe sizing as well as EU. The Japanese sizing is more sensible. It's the actual foot-bed in mm

Love to burst your bubble, but both Russian and American space technologies were based on German engineering. And the retards at NASA nearly botched a Mars probe with their metrological skills recently..
