Update*** will continue to update link as I progress:
http://s114.photobucket.com/albums/n257/mercuno/goat barn/

OK, I have been racking my brain here and I think I have come up with a good idea. Please dont nitpick me to death and bear with me if I dont get the proper terminology. I am a welder and have switched from steel building frame ideas to wood because I think it may be cheaper. So, here goes...

I will be purchasing materials probably this weekend..

20 x 20
flat roof that follows natural slope of ground
mostly home depot prices

24-2x4x8 for bracing of girdles 2.39-57.36
16-2x4x10 for girdles 4.05-64.80
14-2x6x10 for roof and trusses 5.85-81.90
11-4x4x12 for posts set in concrete 12.80-140.80
9-bags of concrete -31.14
4-2x6 joist hangers -12.00
1-5lb box of screws 3" -30.00
1-250' string and string level -8.00

total : 426.00 ---461.15w/tax for the frame

I will set 8 posts on 10' centers around perimeter
I will set the remaining three on 5' centers inside frame
2x6's will go horizontally around the top and also serve as 3 20' rafters with said posts in the center

0----------0----------0

l----------o-----------l

rough idea of the roof. the o's are posts the --- are 2x6
I will place the 2x4x10's at halfway up and at the bottom to screw sheet metal to. The 2x4x8's will brace the 2x4's and 2x6's.

I cant find anything cheaper than sheet metal for the skin and havent had time to call and get a solid price as of yet because I have calculated till my brain is numb about this wood.

It is just gonna be for a goat barn so I think I am fairly strong enough??
what do you guys think?

ok rough math on rough guess for sheet. @ 2.00/lf = 1.5 per square

20x9=180sqft
x4 walls=720sqft
x1.5=1080
plus 400sqft roof
x1.5=600
total for sheet 1680?? wow that blew the budget idea or maybe my numbers are bad because I am still thinking about this at 1:30 on a wednesday night

so that would bring the total to 2141.15

gotta be a cheaper way.

but that is only 5.35 per square foot of barn.

You could make it shorter, goats aren't very tall. Imo, rectagles are cheaper than squares, 16x24 might work better. For goats, I'd use some old junk vans, or a storage a container.

had a re-look at it and may try and follow those all steel carport designs and just use 4" c purlins and skin sideways

You don't say where you are located. Snow load and/or high wind area may be factors in determining the pitch of the roof and size of the rafters. Also I would lean towards 4x6posts, (they don't warp as much as 4x4) you could do away with the middle posts and go with a longer clear span. Depending on your soil type you may not want the posts in concrete. In our clay/ rock soil, gravel packed down is much better and promotes drainage. Just some thoughts. Good luck!

Have you looked at the low-cost metal frame carports? Those can be enclosed to make a garage easily as part of the package. See this as an example:
http://www.eaglecarports.com/garages.html

Prices are going to be real competitive with building it yourself out of wood. They will be rated for wind and snow loads in your area. Being metal the goats will not eat it.

I did take a look at the carports today and they kinda gave me an idea.
I will still use 4x4 posts on 5 foot centers but the major change is that I will use no horizontal supports as the horizontally laid sheets will add that structure and the rafters will be 8" c purlins.
the c purlins were 1.95/lf
galvalume sheets are 1.5/lf

so posts @ 128.00
purlins @ 195.00
sheet metal @ 565.00
total 888.00
add for concrete screws tools

so there it is a 20x 20 x9 with a flat sloped roof in east texas for less than 1300.00....

Check your municipality to see if you need a permit or not. Anything in my county over 200 sq ft require a permit and building plans with drawings for a structure as you're talking about. You might not be required for one, if you do, the office can tell you if the materials you're choosing will pass code or not.

Never raised any goats, but from what I have seen on the neighbors farm, they eat anything they can - barn siding and all.....they also love **** to climb on - put and old junk van in the field and they will be in it and standing on the roof like a kid on a jungle-gym.....
I don't like the ready made carports 'cause they just seem so flimsy, but I guess that could work.
I'd recommend checking prices around the local garden shed / min-barn dealers and look for a "run in" shed. You may find you can buy it and have it dropped in place just as cheap as buying the materials and save the labor....the only reason I'm building my own is no access for them to deliver / put it where I want it.
Anther idea is to check your local small town type hardware / building supply / farm store places and see if they offer any package deals on all materials.

I bought a Carolina Carport 20x20. You can buy the carport model cheap and close in the ends as the budget allows. I bought the garage model woth two roll up doors, a walk door, a window, and taller sides. With a 20x20 slab with footer and another 20x20 slab in front of it, electrical ran 300', all electrical in the building, lights, switches, permits, fill dirt, etc I have $7k into it. I did everything myself except the concrete (including putting up the building)

Can you get hold of used power/telegraph poles? It seems to be the building material of choice for farmers around here as they are dead cheap compared to new timber and also are very heavily treated so don't rot. Migth also be worth scouring ebay and craigslist for used tin siding as it does come up (well it does over here) I'd have thought though that a full tin building will get damn hot in the summer in Texas (mind you I'm basing this soley on cowboy films I've watched as I've never visited Texas! LOL)

Of course it depends on whether you intend building the goat equivalent of a five star hotel or just a cheap goat flophouse!

Well it does get hot here but we have a good steady breeze and I have many large trees out here. the galvalume color reflects most of the heat but its still hot lol.
I bought my posts purlins and 5 of the 19 sheets with lag bolts screws and some string line for a grand total of 581.61 with tax.

the rest of the sheets needed will cost 454.65
so the main brunt of the project is 1035.75****

and I need to get the concrete 40 bux
I made plates at my welding shop to tie the 4x4 to the purlins for 11 bux
The main and only door will just be a framed out 9x6 or so.

all in all I am happy with the totals so far and will post pics of the process and final prices. I mean i never thought I could put together a 20x 20x 9 barn for less than 2800 dollars but here I am looking at 1400 tops. completely enclosed and much stronger...beat that you carport lol

I plan on putting a gutter up to collect rain water for them to drink and a couple of solar panels for a light or two. I am so proud of how cheap and strong this is turning out to be.

well been a while. I went into the barn building business with a heavy learning curve. With trim and a 10x10 door and galvalume r panels concrete lag bolts screws misc my materials are right at 1650.00 I hire labor out at 10/hr and pay one guy about 250 to help me build on the weekends and then add in 1200 profit for me and I cant build em fast enough.

You can go up to 30'wide with a 10'' purlin
25' wide with 8''
4x4 treated posts are good to 12'
4x6 are need for taller but I can only get to 14' because I cant find em any longer

build the doors out of 2x4x11ga steel tubing for the hinge vertical and 2x2x11ga for the rest of the frame 3 verticals and 2 horizontals. USE HEAVY DUTY HINGES****

Oilfield pipe is another great alternative material if you are a proficient welder. hope this helps.
P.S. hire out your concrete labor and you can thank me later LOL
