About the only place I can think of where I can buy a sheet of plwood, a mattress, gallon of milk, can of beef stew, DVD player...............and a kitchen sink.

They built a new Menards Mega Center in Hodgkins, Il. near me a few years ago. Nice big place with good prices. It's one of the nicest home improvement centers I've been to. They have a couple of glass elevators plus a moving escalator that you can take your cart on up to the upper level. Has the food pantry with good prices on the food also. It is also my favorite home improvement store of the several mentioned. It would be nice if Menards would get with the program and redesign their primative website? I do like the HD and Lowes websites.

Oh, forgot to mention the piano player(s) there (Menards) on the weekends at the bottom of the escalators. :pimpflash

Lately I have been impressed with Menards for stepping up their fasteners to some lines that are more geared toward commercial grade contractor stuff. Specifically their concrete fastener selection.

I don't know if he still is, but a couple years ago, John Menard was on record as the single highest tax payer to the federal govt. He has his hands in so many business dealings it would make most of our heads spin.

Didn't that one start out as a Knox Lumber?? Remember them?? Was one on 694 and 81 I believe. Brooklyn Park.

Not sure, I think it was always a Menards.

I have been involved with the building trades in some fashion all my life. From Minneapolis to Eastern SD and out here in Rapid City I have shopped a ton of different stores/yards. From what I have seen, you gotta shop around when it comes to materials. Menards might be the best on insulation when Lowes might offer a better choice/price on deck lumber. Your local yard might have the hookup on roofing etc...........

I do like the USA sales Menards has been doing. I had to replace some nailsets and found some made in Wisconsin!

I bought a couple of real long MasterForce screwdrivers there last week on sale. Kind of low use item so I didn't want to pay big bucks, but I was surprised to see they are made in USA.

I am forced to agree with jmh21586, I needed 12 standard 2x4 studs in October, went through an entire pallet to just root through twisted mess of wood, If I need lumber, I go across the street to the Lowes, even if it is more cost, 85-90% of the stack is very good lumber there.

But the worst thing about Menards is their lumber. Good for firewood but not much more. What a bunch of twisted, warped, low grade ****. And that's why it's cheaper.

Does your Menards happen to have a Home Depot in the area??
Once Home Depot moved in down the street from our Menards the lumber quality seemed to pick up considerably.
I bought a bunch of 2x4s and 2x6s from them this summer, had a hard time finding a bad one in the stacks. Straight, clear of knots, no splits etc, very nice lumber.
I bought some 1x4's from Home Depot last winter, most of what they had were nasty.
Menard's "treated" lumber used to be dip treated only, now it seems to be actually pressure treated. When you cut the old stuff you could clearly see that the treatment only went in a short distance, the new stuff is green all the way through.
Menards is no different than anywhere else, you've gotta be careful what you buy. I would say the overall quality of their products has improved in the last few years.

I'd like to go to Lowes or Home Depot but they keep pissin' me off.
Our Lowes says "Entrada" on the front door, I can't figure out how to get in without an "Enter" on the door and I've told them so. Until they fix it I wont go in even if they hold the door and invite me.
Our home Depot peaved me this fall when I was shopping for wire, their prices were nearly double what Menards wanted for teh same wire.

One of the Menards has a Home Depot right next door. Their lumber still isn't any good. Especially the treated. I just don't know how anyone could use that ****. If you ever look, their plywood is usually a three ply. But most lumber yards carry 5-7 ply. Even their 1x's are a bunch of ****. I did buy some decent 2x10's there a few years back, but I only used them for concrete forms anyway. But in MN, if there's a Menards, there's a Home Depot not too far away. Lowes is just working it's way into the area.

All in all I'm sure thankfull for our local lumberyard, even though the prices are higher, their stock is beautiful.

To bump this thread...

Everything in the store is now 20% off. I was over there today and they surprisingly have a pretty good selection of stuff left. They've somewhat consolidated the departments, but still a pretty decent selection.

If you're in the market for hardware, plumbing, or electrical stuff... Seemed to be a pretty good selection of tools as well.

Not sure about the building materials - if they have much left, or if it's part of the 20% off deal - forgot to look.

Also, store fixtures are for sale.
