Edger blade shaft removal

I need to remove the blade shaft on my 1970's Trim-All edger to replace the bearings. Before I start to hammer on it, does anyone know the proper removal procedure? I'm not sure if it's pressed in or if it's got some rust holding it in tight.

An arbor press would be one of the better tools I can think of to start to work on it.

A hammer, not so much as its going to mushroom the ends of the shafts that you don't want mushroomed...

If you had a press you'd have to place it so the shaft is vertical, so that would require removal of the spindle & arm from the machine.

Also good would be to know what type of bearings are in it...how did you obtain the drawing for the shaft? The pulley end of the shaft also appears to have a nut which is not shown on the drawing....

Typically bearings are press on the ID and slide on the OD.

Of course its gonna be rusty, but that shouldn't be a problem. clean up the exposed portions of shaft with emery, take a good look for set screws, and clamp bolts. and use a gear puller on whatever you can. I wouldn't be afraid to to lightly beat on anything with a soft hammer, but make sure to completely asses the situation before doing anything too drastic.

The thing that looks like a large nut on the pulley isn't. It's actually part of the pulley. Tomorrow I plan to tear the edger down for a refurb now that I know everything works so I'l try pressing out the shaft.

My wizard edger was all just light press fit. The bearings press into the housing and over the spindle up to the step on the shaft.

What passes through the groove on the narrow section of the shaft on the right side of the drawing" If that is clear it should tap out with the bearing. If no press a brass or aluminum drift would help preserve the shaft. lots of penetrating fluid, heat if needed.

That area is a flat for the set screw that holds the pulley on.
