Edit Time Limits

Putting a reasonable time limit such as 30-60 minutes on the edit post function would cut down on the need to quote people nearly every time we post. This will cut down on the server load and preserve "content" also.

Usually a 10 minute edit time on post titles works well.

These settings are found in the vB Admin panel.

Up which one?

10 minutes is great for a title but a person should only be able to edit their own posts for 30 minutes or so.

I can still edit posts I made weeks ago... Which is what leads to problems when someone answers a post and then the original post disappears leaving the person answering looking like they are talking to themselves... 30-60 minutes at the outside works well on many forums.

Increasing the edit time from 2 minutes to 10 minutes would be great. Often times I've deleted my whole post because I misspelled a word and I didn't want the post being displayed as edited.

Having an unlimited time for deleting my own posts has been a godsend for me because sometimes I'll post something and then realize several hours later that my post provides no real value to the thread and so I'll delete it.

I also like the long edit times. It allows me to update thread-starting posts wth info that people would miss if they didn't read through the entire thread.

Old thread, but apt topic.

Has the limit recently changed?

I just found it to be 60 minutes. Trying to correct something from this afternoon. Not a big deal, you DO need to draw the line somewhere...just never ran into it

So, changed? Or always been there (since this thread was ended)?

Thx

No, how long (ie number of minutes) until a user can no longer edit their own post?

I went back to correct something and VBulletin said, basically, too late- you only get 60 minutes'

So my question is, did this recently change or has it always been 60?

OH..WAIT.

There WAS an 'edit' button presented to me. I used it, it took me to the edit function- but when I went to 'save' it gave me an error.

That is odd, isnt it....

2nd edit.

It may have been an old 'view' that I had open in the browser. SO it showed an edit button, but once 60 minutes passed VB just ignores the request......

I prefer unlimited edit time.

I often come back to threads weeks later and i realized i mispelled or screwed up on a code cite.

Being able to edit posts indefinitely helps me to be able to make sure things are correct.

I vastly prefer unlimited editing time. If I have a how-to sort of post, and a while later I figure out a better way, it is nice to edit the original post vs adding a followup that may not be seen. Guys doing resource posts often reserve a few of the first posts to organize content, and an edit limit kills that too. Finally, I feel the poster should have the ability (nay, right) to remove content if they ever see fit. That's how I see it.

I like unlimited time to edit my posts however if the powers that be want a reasonable time limit I'm OK with that too. How about a couple of hours tho?

At a forum where I am an administrator, we used V bulliten, but recently switched to Xenforo and one feature I like about them is that when you go to edit, at any time, you can elect to edit silently by selecting a box. It's slick! No "last edited XXXXX"

So take your ball and go home?

I know, I know...this is a topic that reasonable people disagree on. My view is once the community has engaged on a subject, the CONVERSATION belongs to the forum.

Now if we could make editing for correctness unlimited, but no deletions.

;)

That's a great point. I hadn't really considered that, as I generally favored the sentiment expressed by the person who you were quoting (I've never been able to figure out the multi-quote function, btw).

In general, I've always seen it that the the worth of a forum rests primarily in the contributions of its participants. (I'm far less persuaded by the argument that: well so and so has paid for this or that -- though one shouldn't discount the time many freely give to maintain a forum). However, once that initial contribution yields "conversation" as you put it, it's an entirely different thing. And further value is created. And it would seem to be more of a collective thing.

Anyway, I second allowing more time to post. It's annoying to go back and enter user/pass again.

multi-quote function is easy. Select multi-quote on the comments you want to quote, then when all done selecting, click quote on one of the comments you previously selected "multi-quote" on.

New page should appear with all the quotes you selected.

Remember, it does put them in order of selection. So if you want comments to be arranged in a certain order, select them in that order.
