As the 4th generation on the ranch that my great grandfather operated through the depression, I've discovered the penchant my predecessors had for sliding doors on tracks for all the big openings, including my 1947 concrete tipup garage. I would be the first in my family to own an overhead garage door with an opener, on the family ranch.

The West facing side has two overlapping sliding doors. I would like to frame in the Northern Half with a man door, and install an overhead garage door on the Southern Half.

The opening I'm considering for the overhead door measures 9 ft 6 inches wide to the Southern wall, and 7 ft 6 inches tall. There is a 4x6 beam supporting the existing header that is sistered true 2x8's I believe.

In looking at openers and tracks I've determined I'll need to build a short wall at least 7 inches wide on one side to allow room for hardware. I'm curious how our DIY'er s here would frame in that opening to a size to accommodate a standard size overhead door, and Wall mounted opener.

Don't forget that most garage doors take up 10-15 foot of ceiling space the width of the door. . Can't use them with a lift without a lot of trouble. I decided 30 years ago to get a commercial roll up door with slats that could be replaced individually if you damage several. Just this past week I finally had to replace some slats because of damage.

I just looked at our current garage w/ an old style opener mounted over top of the door. There is a 2x6 flat on the wall floor to ceiling inside that the door tracks mount to. I looked at a pic of our previous garage w/ a wall mounted Liftmaster 8500. At the side of the door is same floor to ceiling flat mounted 2x6 (but it may be a 2x8) that mounts the tracks and the opener. The same 2x also provides mounting for the ends of the spring shaft that goes across just above the door. So the structure is nearly identical for both types of openers.
