Some Special Notes:

Many thanks to Fellow GJ member Twertsy for all his help in finding information about Mr. Pfauser's life History and answering my questions about one of his ratchets for this post. In case you have never seen his web-site I suggest you visit it at Tool Archives. com for a better understanding of vintage tools; (links below).

They tell me it is an Art to making dull stories come alive and I will try my best; my last few stories only get so few people looking and it takes me a few days sometimes to research each vintage tool ; It is not like looking at old vintage vises which seem to get many hits as they say.

I started asking questions when I found the words Pat. Pending on a 10 inch Extension tool and I thought to myself "woody what kind of patent are they talking about?" After all it is just an Extension why all the fuss?

It turns out that Spring- loaded detent plunger, slanted locking pin (at an angle hold this thought), is the patent, and I had to look at a lot of patents just to find the answer. The patent was filed on Jan. 27th 1932 and Granted on Sept. 26th 1933, By Mr. Pfauser.

I must have an early example because I found my example #9210s in the 1931 Blackhawk catalog and only marked Pat. Pending. It had a list price of $1.30 and it was 10" in length and comes equipped with the lock-on.

Mr. Pfauser must have been a very bright man if you look at the Tool Archives web photo of the Blackhawk Female 3/8 drive lock-on ratchet No. 9706s indeed you will find the inside also has that slant for the angle of the locking pin. (see above thought).

Oh and if I forget Mr. Pfauser only went to the 1st grade wow as they say! He was born in Minnesota in 1894 and he started working for the Blackhawk co. in 1926. He died sometime in 1981 in Wisconsin and he left us with many patents to his name. For his full History be sure and look at the following links and again thank you twertsy for finding his history on such short notice.

Nice write-up Woody. Absolutely incredible he only finished 1st grade. When I saw that in his census records I was flabbergasted! The man must have simply had an engineering mind. I also noticed he invented the first self-propelled lawn mower!
