Wondering if an electric heater would be good for my radiant floor heat. Electric is somewhat cheap here and would save me alot of hassle running a gas line and no chimney to leak.

I guess electric might be cheaper then oil, but everyone has their own opinion on what cheap really is .

A direct vent heater or using a chimney shouldnt be to much of a hassle ...

I'm in your area Dave and agree that we have VERY reasonable electric rates compared to many other places. I use electric heat supplemented on real cold days by propane.

If you haven't done it yet, check into some of those other suppliers we now have for electricity. It will save you a few bucks.

Bottom line, I figured that NG is still the cheapest way to go for me but not by much after I added all of the customers fees and surcharges from Ameren.

Can't give an exact number. Just know that my bill is mostly high because of ng. Run AC all summer and bill is around 100 bucks.

Funny how things vary in diffrent parts of the country. nat gas is way cheaper then elect out here in new england

Okay, let try to get scientific !

What does electricity cost in your area ($ per KwH)

What does NG cost (usually $/CCF or dollars per 100 cubic feet)

Im to lazy to look at the numbers again , but switching from a elect water heater to gas saved me about $30-40 a month.

You likely need to be around 4 cents/KwH, if NG is a dollar per therm. Electric boilers generally half the cost of a codensing gas boiler installed.

NG is cheap and is likely to stay that way for a long time. If you have it available, NG will just about always be the best choice.

Without NG available (myself and a large percentage of the population), the choice is then between LPG and electric. Often times, these two fuels are very close in cost and in many areas the electric is cheaper.

Electric heating requires a stout supply but no chimney, exhaust, fumes, etc. and you already have a metered supply for the home. Cheaper to install and can easily be on standby for years without trouble.

When the power goes out, so does your heat. At least with a fossil fuel source you can run a small genset to keep the heat on.
