I hope this hasn't been beat to death already. Most of the posts I see are about battery drills. I'm thinking about a good 3/8 corded drill. I'm not a pro and for most things my cheap old B&D works okay but I'd like something better. There is such a small selection at Home Despot and Lowes I'd thought I'd see what you guys thought.

Thanks.

Do the 3/8th corded DeWalt drills have a button to lock the speed of the drill?

I'd suggest a used Milwaukie. Shop Ebay, G-sales, flea markets, etc.

The old USA made Milwaukies are built like tanks.

Good old power drills are thick on the ground. Everyone wants battery powered. I just bought a perfectly good Milwaukee for $5 at a garage sale. Make sure you get the chuck key with it.

Here one, a Milwaukee Magnum
Best 1/2" on the planet. (USA made models anyway.)
I think they made a 3/8" version of this also.

I've owned and used electric drills for over 40 years now, and I have wiped out and burned up just about every brand ever made.
You need to take a look at your personal needs. If you are a contractor and use the drill hard every day, get a Milwaukee. Expect to pay a big price for the drill and expect to pay high prices for replacement parts and repairs for it, but you can also expect the drill to last many years.
If you are a homeowner and hobbyist, you don't need to spend that kind of money. You can do just as well with a cheap Chinese drill. Buy it cheap, beat it up for 15 years, and junk it the first time it gives you trouble. You can buy a lot of Chinese drills for the price of one Milwaukee drill, and repairing a tired Milwaukee drill costs more than one or two new cheap Chinese drills.

If you are buying a drill to impress people, go for the expensive one. If you are buying it to get work done, just buy what you need.

I have the 3/8" in a much older model...working in the trades it has hundreds of hours of use, replaced cord and brushes a couple of times. Smooth even power and a great tool. I haven't used on made in the past 20 years so can't comment about current models

a Milwaukee Magnum - Best 1/2" on the planet.

Pretty broad overstatement. Agreed, the Magnum is probably the best compact pistol grip variable speed 1/2". However, for the heavy work, I've got old B&D, Thor and Milwaukee D-handles which will twist that little Magnum in half. They weigh a ton, have only one speed, but they are unstoppable.

I have a 3/8 milwaukee magnum and would guy one again... I am milwaukee fan, but from the other stuff I have used I like it best and they do last a long long time... Mine is the older one that looks more like bare metal than the new ones that are painted gray.

I have a pair of DeWalt 3/8" keyed chuck drills; one from 1994 (USA) and one from 2006 (Mexico). I like them both, the older one is still kicking and has plenty of power. I'm no pro, but it sees quite a bit of use and I'm certainly not easy on it. You can't go wrong with Milwaukee, but they usually weigh a lot. I have a Milwaukee 1/2" for heavy jobs and the lighter DeWalts are my go-to drills.

In my opinion, keyed chuck is the only way to go for corded drills.

My father still uses his 3/8" Milwaukee Hole Shooter that he got in 1966. It features one speed and is not reversible.

Did you ever wonder how the old timers got along being burdened with a cord, a chuck that required a key, and a single speed that only turned one way?

The 1/2" Magnum Hole Shooter is my favorite drill of all time.

Those old monstrous 1/2" D handles will break your fingers, wrists, and/or arms. The one my father has changes the direction of Earth's rotation when it gets hung up while drilling a hole.

...any recommendations on smaller corded drills? I think Metabo makes a smaller one, for example.
