Perhaps you could us an electric die grinder and a cut-off wheel arbor. This way you could have a grinder from a reputable brand

I've wondered if anyone else makes something like this too. I just bought the HF one b/c I won't need it very often. I'm surprised by how smooth and quiet it is, but haven't actually used it yet.

I have 2 of the HF electric cutoff tools. I just used one today, cutting down a seat frame for my T-bucket.I bought one off the discount rack, and one on sale for 19.99. The secret is to take them apart and bypass the reset button.Very simple to plug the 2 wires together,it only takes a few minutes. I have used mine for about 6 months. It really saves wear and tear on the air compressor. Also get good quality cutoff wheels, not those paper-mache things from HF.A friend gave me a"firestorm" wheel, and it outlasted 10 HF wheels.I think it was from Forney welding.

I have one of these and actually prefer it over my air cutoff tool. It's more powerful and a bit quieter. At least for bodywork, I like it a lot.

Not 3" AFAIK. Of course many make 4.5 angle grinders (which Dewalt seemed to always call a cut-off tool in the XRP line)

I was wondering what the actual difference is between these things and an angle grinder? They look just like and angle grinder without a handle.

It's more like a die grinder and uses the smaller 3" wheels. It would be fine for smaller stuff, but I like the power of my angle grinders.

Does anyone make a cordless cut of tool?

I have a Dewalt "cut-off" tool.

Why they call it a cut-off tool and not a grinder is beyond me. I have used it to grind metal as well as cut of metal objects. It's awesome to trim off old nails when remodeling. It uses the same blades as my 4 1/2" corded angle grinder.

I bought one because of a recommendation on the HF Pass/Fail thread, I use it for smaller projects and so far it's done everything I wanted it to. Beats multiple cuts with a Hacksaw..

FWIW, I just bought one of the HF ones. I have angle grinders, air tools, etc. I am fixing my compressor, and figured I would get one of these since I had no air. It is woefully underpowered, and i am not "overloading" it. Breaker trips right away. I will bypass it and use it till it catches fire.

The must use the same motors as Dremel.:monkey_po

Trade it in at HF for another. I have the same model and it works great. You might simply have a bad one from the production run. It happens to every brand.

I thought about that but I figured the production run probably filled an entire cargo container from china so it might take a few months to get into the next batch of production.

Have had one for several yrs and it works great on exhaust work!

As for the reviewers, they overloaded the tool, and needed to push the yellow reset button!!

^^this

I have had two, first one started smoking the second I plugged it in, so I had to return it. The second one has worked great, if you push down on the wheel VERY hard it slows down the rpm and the tool goes into overload protection mode. I am able to cut a ton of things though, you just have to push down moderately, not like you are trying to strangle the item being cut.

I use a cutoff wheel in my angle grinder instead of one of these, but I learned a long time ago to let the tool do the work. Especially true of the oscillating multi-tools.

Had the HF one for a year and cuts miles of all thread and angle never any problems. Take your time and let the blade work, would buy another in a heartbeat.

I had a IR 14.4 volt cordless cut off wheel and it was always a gigantic *************. It would overheat and shut down cutting through a 5/16 bolt.

if its more powerful than your air, you have an air issue or an air tool issue. ive got a few different air ones that will kick like a shotgun.

the HF electric is nice, you just cant man handle it like you would with an air. air will bog down and you can adjust your angle. the HF electric just trips the breaker at any sign of a bind. its a safety feature, but too good of one.

i got mine back when they were 17 bucks. :)
