I am looking for a new fan/ shutter combo. We have used these fans for years which allow heat to fly by in winter.
I have to update the fans and was looking for a shutter that would open when fans were turned on.
There would have to be a motor that would close vents while off. ??
Thoughts.

A "whole house fan" will typically have the shutters.

Depending on how high that is, etc, you could rig up a system to slide a piece of 3/4" ply over the opening and screw it into place. Build some rudimentary guides and it could just slide to the side over the summer.

Motorized dampers on exhaust fans are a common thing in industrial applications. You'll probably have to go to a local HVAC supply to find what you need, I don't know that the big box stores will carry them. There are a number of brands, Greenheck is the one that pops in my head at the moment. http://www.greenheck.com/
