I was at a riding stable and if you got too close to the electric fence you would hear a humming or buzzing sound.
The horses were smart. They would act all nice like they wanted attention. Then they would have a good horsey laugh if you got zapped.
Multimeter leads would pick up the EMF from a few feet away. A handheld CB radio would likely pick it up too.
