Well this is my first post and just moved into my first place with a garage. I live in a townhouse that has a 1 car garage. Im not to sure if it is insulated or not to be honest, i would guess not. I would like to work on my car during this northern indiana winter. I cant run gas lines to run a gas heater. Those salamander kerosene heaters are a definitely a no since the fumes they give out give me a headache. So an electric heater would be my obvious choice. I know very little about heaters so i need some help in choosing one that would be good for a small one car garage. Any recomendations?

i just bought a Soleus 5000w/17,100 forced air heater at menards for around $225 with 2 yr warranty, it runs on a 220v/30amp circuit.. i'm sure it would heat your 1 car garage.
several companies make these type of heaters Dayton,Farenheit,Dimplex,Soleus,King are a few brands, some have thermostats, some dont.. you can add a thermostat if they dont have one..

I would say if the garage door is insulated a small one car garage could be heated with a pair of radiant 110 volt heaters should do the trick . I have a Dayton 3VU36 220 volt heater in my 2 car garage and it does great in here .

Insulate the door with some foam board on the inside.
If it is a townhouse I would guess you have the neighbors garages on each side so no need to insulate the side walls.
Then get a electric IR radiant heater shining down at the windshield.
They are easy to install and turn on and off.
In a small garage I have warmed it up enough just by running the car with the door cracked to let out the exhaust.
After it was up to temp turn off the car and shut the door.
The car will radiate heat for quite a while.

I wouldn't recommend using a heater with open fire or exposed heating element. Same goes for most infrared space heaters.
They are just too risky to leave in an unattended room, like the garage is. Just to be on the safe side, I went with a portable oil filled radiator instead. Their surface doesn't get hot enough to be able to cause any fires. Mine is this one: honeywell oil-filled radiator but I believe almost any other oil radiator would be fine too.
