I've been on electric water heaters for about 28 years. The one in my house when I bought it lasted about 10 years. The replacement went about 15 years. Replaced that one about 3 years ago. Never drained a water heater in 50 years. Electric in this house or gas in previous house.

I hook my water heater hose up to the power washer and give things a hot bath. Everybody wins
If I had tried that with my old water heater the water supply of the pressure washer would have been plugged up with lime scale debris, was still working with no leaks at 40 years old when it was retired a few months ago.

snipped...
most important though is changing the anode rod every 5 yrs or so. get an impact wrench and a tap and it will be a breeze.

This is most important.^^^^^
And checking it more often won't hurt a thing, depending on your water.

I think its perfectly reasonable to call it a hot water heater.
Think of it like the name "well pump". The pump doesn't pump wells, its a water pump. But calling it a water pump isn't sufficiently descriptive. Its a water pump that pumps water out of your well.
So if you parse the name as a HOT WATER heater, as in the heater that is hooked up to your hot water system, then it makes sense. As opposed to a water heater that might be there to prevent water from freezing, that would not be a hot water heater, because it doesn't provide hot water.
