It's well known the average gas mower lasts well over 10 years (assuming home use, ~50 hours/year) with minor maintenance. Let's not be silly here.
I doubt the “average” gets maintenance and many die a death from thousands of ways- transaxle failures, deck damage, repairs are more than it’s worth, etc.
Yes there are thousands of old CC and Deere gear drive and hydrostats still going but those are the exception.

I would dare to say the average GJ member is not the average American in the when it comes to the size of their lawn

I have a one acre lot. I put about 30 hours a year on my 54" zero turn. I bought my current mower 2 years ago. I'm sure I'll get 10 years out of it, hopefully 20. But I have no doubt my next one will be battery powered. I would love one of those little robots for inside my fence. I just saw an article the other day from some Turf Grass College professor talking about the benefits of barely trimming the grass daily versus chopping off 1/3rd once a week.

I was surprised to see Deere using Ego batteries. But it makes sense. The batteries are pretty good.

It’s really a shame that the Ego warranty process seems to be such a **** show. At least around here and also based on the review.

I thought Ego might participate here but search says no.
I can confirm that trying to get anything warrantied/repaired by eGO *****.
your mower has a single blade motor malfunctioning? better trailer it to a dealer. or by the part yourself (it's much more convenient).

$400 battery misbehaving days out of warranty? call-center flow chart says it MUST be aged out and needs replacing. or just open it yourself and fix the manufacturing defect yourself! it's easy!

that said their general build quality seems OK. I've eaten rocks and rubber doormats with the snowblower and it just keeps on going.

There are thousands of (comparatively bad) 1045 cub cadets still tooling around. More often than not the deck wears out before the chassis/motor (and the decks on the EL units aren't very good).

Does anyone own one of these lawn tractors. Not the zero turn versions. I’m looking for pros and cons. Not seeing the value for the price yet. Though I’d like to go electric. And would want a wagon and canopy.

Thanks

  1. Greenworks Crossover T 80V
  2. EGO POWER+ 56V T6
  3. Ryobi R1 80V
  4. Cub Cadet LT42E 56V
If you plan on pulling a wagon, the instant torque on electric tractors is a massive plus compared to gas. Just check the hitch weight capacity before buying, and look into aftermarket universal canopies to save some money.

gotta make sure its on the charger all the time in winter.
Eh? Winter is good for modern battery storage. Shouldn't charge it if it's freezing... Most BMS will prevent this anyway. Get to 80% and throw that stuff in the shop.. It'll be fine next summer!

I should have been more specific. I do have small trickle type smart chargers. so more maintaining.
Back in the day i'd take the leads off and leave it out there no problem. Tractor battery would last 5 plus years at least. Now with today's batteries being ten times more expensive and lasting only a few years I'm maintaining every battery like a commododity all winter.

Lithium ion and lithium iron phosphate batteries will experience faster degradation being kept over 70-80 percent charge level and is worse if left that way for significant time. Charging below freezing will damage them as well. Many, especially Lifepo4 will experience damage if you use them below freezing as well requiring heaters to use them in cold weather. Many have BMS controllers built into the packs that will not let you charge or use them if outside temp parameters

Some even have heaters to warm the batteries when you connect a charger... the BMS automatically enables the heater and resumes charging when it's safe.

Idk. Is the gas engine going to last?
gas engines last indefinitely if maintained for home use. The red one was not maintained..

Eventually all parts have a life cycle and wear out or break from fatigue regardless of how rigorous the maintenance schedule is. And age doesn’t equal thousands of hours of use.
