electric meter base and service panel install

Have dried in my 26x26 garage and am in the process of getting new service ran by the utility. I plan on doing the wiring myself. I did however contact an electrical contractor to give me a price on mounting the outdoor meter base( POCO provided) and the indoor 200 amp panel. these panels will be back to back on the wall. I went this route rather than spending hours looking into the proper through wall connectors, clamps ,seals etc. The price given was a whopping $1850. for the install. With no circuits. $585 for meter panel install $1030 for panel install 100 for ground rods and 125 for permit. I already have the permit and I told them I would hammer in the ground rods. Is this normal pricing? or did this guy obviously not want or need the work.?

This was just to mount them? On your permit?

Who is going to run the wire between them and them up to mast for the POCO?

Panel is going to be about $200 in parts. $50? For the condiut between them.

Seems ridiculous or a result of poor communication regarding the scope of work.

Something seems wrong. I just did one that was a back to back install. It was only 100 amp. But the meter base with a disconnect was like $150 or so and the 100 amp panel was like $60. It took me about an hour to install them. 200 amp is more of course, but not that much more. Why not just install them yourself?

I had service upgraded from 100 amp to 200 amp, new panel installed in house, 100 amp service run off it to garage thru 100 foot of conduit to a new
panel in garage, materials and labor 2000. I had the trench from the house already dug and the conduit already installed. Your price seems crazy, especially as CT is usually higher cost area.

I did mine myself when I built my shop. But of course permits and areas are different. The power company provided a blueprint of their requirements that I followed. When the utility technician showed up to hook the power up he even told me he had electrical contractors that he would like for me to teach on how to do the install properly.

If you can wire the place, you can do the service entrance. I did mine for my garage, was about 300 bucks for a 200 amp and it was not even back to back. No permits here though, so it made that cheaper and easier.

Talk to the power company and make friends at a good electrical supply house....both can guide you through it, I was surprised how easy it is.

I just sorta did that, I had to have a licensed electrician install the future house meter as a temp on the house with some ext. Receptacels and did everything else myself from there.
