A little while back I got my hands on a nice air compressor with a bad motor. Original motor was 1.5hp but I had a 1 horse that I thought would work, sure enough it only had enough power to get to 30 psi. So I put an ad on Craigslist looking for a 1.5. Guy calls says he's got one off an old shopsmith and wants $100. I said I could do 75 and we have a deal. I go over to check it out and I ask to see it run so he hits the switch and it just hums and doesn't get a full revolution in. He says it was just working a bit ago but it's no good to him so I can just have it If I want to try and fix it. I gave him 10 bucks for it because I figured it was something simple.
Funny part was he was an electrical engineer!
Anyways I get it home and start to spin the pulley by hand and then press the switch and voila! It runs, blew the dust out of it and it starts on its own every time now. Guess luck was on my side!
