Hey Gang, want to buy my heater soon.....Im in Kamloops B.C. ( can get cold here for a few months) My shop (stick building) is 30x28 R-28 in the attic and R-20 bats in the walls. 10 foot celing, 2 10x10 insulated doors, 2 3x2 windows and a $300 man door..... Floor radiant wasnt a option and running a gas line the distance isnt an option either. So, im stuck with electric or propane. I would be happy to keep it a little above freezing when im not in there and when im working, pump it up a bit more....My full time job isnt in the shop, so i would only go in , on weekends or evenings to work on my race car( or if i need a place to get drunk away from the family and watch a hockey game). So, if you were in my shoes, which heater would you purchase?

Propane. Sounds perfect for your shop. Northern Tools has a sale right now on heaters. That is where I bought my 45k btu Mr. Heater. That unit would be great for your shop as mine is 24x32.

Keep an eye on Craigslist for 120 gallon propane tanks.

I just bought a Modine 45,000 BTU propane unit from H-MAC Systems Inc for $509 delivered. Even though the Mr Heater was less expensive I chose the Modine because I've read on this blog stories of circuit board problems with the Mr Heater and delivery problems from Northern Tool involving UPS with less than satisfactory resolutions. That's not to say everyone had a problem, but more had a problem with the Mr Heater than with the Hot Dawg by Modine. Just my opinion.

Do you think i should maybe have a single baseboard heater running or something on low when i wont be in there for a few days? Or does the propane heaters do that?

You just need to make sure the thermostat you use is capable of a low set point.

In the olden days, normal mercury t-stats didn't go low enough for your application, but I think you'll find many digital ones will allow a suitable set point.

You won't need an electric heater.
