I will be adding smoke alarms to each room in a two story home. Q do they need to be all on one circuit? This would be the type that is direct wire w/battery back-up. Possibly use co2/smoke alarms would be a better choice? You can at least shut them off in the case of a false alarm (Like a candle burning):confused::headscrat:)

Yes, all the alarms to be interconnected must be on the same circuit. At least, that's what I recall from installing my alarms. 14-3 works well for wiring in smoke alarms. Use the red as the signal wire.

Technically, I believe the code says they should be on a circuit that also supplies power to an essential light, such as a hall light fixture. Thus, you'll know if the breaker has tripped and be less likely to simply turn the breaker off to silence them.

A candle or two should not set off a smoke alarm unless it is burning directly under it. Read up on the various types of detectors and their placement and make appropriate choices. You can buy detectors with a "hush" feature which will turn off the alarm quickly so long as the smoke or fire detection doesn't persist.

Your rules may vary,but up here combo smoke/CO alarms are the rule.The detectors will all be interconnected by the 14/3,so yes they will be on the same circuit,which must be on a general lighting/power circuit.Many years ago the rule said the alarms shall be on a dedicated circuit with no other devices,but was changed because the first time someone burnt the toast-the breaker got flipped off and usually never turned back on!
