I'm looking for some input on how to run some additional outlets in my garage. I currently have several 15a 120v outlets and they work for the most part, but struggle at times when running some of my more demanding tooling.

I plan to add 3 more circuits.
** A 30a/240v circuit for a new air compressor
** A 50a/240v circuit for a new welder
** A 20a/120v circuit with 3-4 more outlets

All 3 wires will be run through 1 conduit, so it will likely have to be 1-1.5 in in size.

I'm torn on how to run the conduit cosmetically so it's functional and doesn't look horrible. I'd love to run the wire behind the drywall, but I have limited access above the garage and I already put the 100amp sub panel and lift wiring in externally mounted, so I may as well keep the trend going.

What are your thoughts? How would you run the wire?

your plan to run only one conduit may prove impractical. for one, you will have to derate the wire as there are more than 3 current carrying conductors in the conduit. 1 1/2 in pipe and fittings are much more expensive than 3/4 pipe and fittings.

You could run the cables high on the wall and install a crown mold type cover and just fish the vertical part of the run behind the drywall down to the receptacles. Or install some wall mounted fluorescent fixtures on 45 deg brackets and run conduit on the top side of the brackets .


Yes if you run more than 3 current carrying conductors together they can't carry as many amps so would have to be larger. The reason is the heat transferred to the other cables.

What about running a single drop in the corner from the ceiling then going across above the chair rail with your junction boxes inline with the conduit?
