I rent space in a 50x100 garage. I have a lift that runs on 220. It is a 14.1amp draw, per the motor plate. I run my lift using an 80 foot SWOOJ 12/2 cord to plug into a 220v recepticle across the garage when I need to use the lift.

I now have a 5 hp 220v air compressor (22.3amp) to throw in the mix. The recepticle I am plugging into is actually a 50amp circuit btw. So, If connected the compressor and lift and used 10 ga., I couldnt use the lift while the air compressor is on.

If I were to tie the compressor to the lift using 10ga. romex to the junction box on the lift, would I then need 8 ga SWOOJ to plug in across the shop???

I found an ebay seller that sells 8/2 romex buy the foot for 99 cents/foot with free shipping. If I ran a 40 amp circuit, How would I wire the lift? Would I run the 8ga to a recepticle by the compressor and then pipe 12/2 for the lift over to the recepticle??

Anyone have any thoughts???

Todd, I see this has been ignored and I can kind of understand why. There are several issues at work here and these are really 2 different pieces of equipment and its not an ideal setup to run from the jbox of one to the other although it could be somewhat safe depending on a couple of factors, one being if the motor on the hoist had its own thermal, etc but this would be a cobble at best for the most part. Most of the advice given here is about doing code compliant installs. This being in a rented building is actually another legal factor.

If its a 50 amp plug there what you could do for temp wich is what a lot of builders do is get a plug that plugs into it and wire it to a small sub panel and wire from that ive built a for for jobs i was working at pluged into a range outlet 100 feet of cord to a sub panel and had a fue plugs wired off the side for temp power

There are some grounding issues with this depending on the range plug, 3 wire and 4 wire makes a difference in how the panel gets wired.

The existing breaker is protecting the wiring in the wall. You don't need the extension cord to match the wiring in the wall. You SO cable needs to be large enough to handle the load of the device you are powering and compensate for any voltage loss. I would put another 50 amp receptacle next to the existing and put 50 amp circuit and wire them together like any other convenience receptacle and plug them both in. Neither of these circuits is dedicated since it isn't a dryer outlet, or a commercial business/building, right?

If the existing 50 amp circuit has a neutral, I would wire them both with 4 wire receptacles.

I think I need to just run a sep 30 amp circuit on 10/2 for the compressor and a 20amp on 12/2 for the lift. There is room in the panel for both. The 50amp plug I referred to is existing. I dont HAVE to use that. Its a block building with open rafters. I will be able to get romex through the rafters and into conduit down the walls where I need it for the compressor and lift. Can I run the 12/2 out of the rafters into conduit straight into the lift jbox? Or do I have to use a plug and recept?

Now you have a decent plan, ideally there should be a means of disconnect especially if the breaker box is a great distance away or cant be seen. I know my hoist came with cord and plug setup, the installer said something about the plug being a requirement, maybe someone here knows but it could have something to do with the fact it came with a cord, a cord and plug would give a means of service disconnect.

For your application using conduit to protect the wire is fine, a single circuit in pipe is not a big deal especially with the load you are applying and the duty cycle.

Assuming I need to run a plug, Is it ok to have the recepticle box attached to the lift, and then a short 3ft run of 12/2 stranded from the lift jbox to the recepticle? If its not ok to attach the recepticle box to the lift, where would I put it? Screwed to the rafters? Thanks for the help. The main breaker box is not in plain view. Its about 60 feet away, behind a door.

Cant have exposed romex in a commercial building. Has to be concealed behind building material with a 15 min finish rating. (that is assuming romex is even allowed in this building at all)

your right, my city code guy told me no exposed romex anywhere. He did say it could be behind sheetrock or wires run in a conduit. He said this is for safety reasons.

Believe it or not, Its actually a garage that someone built at their house. Its a 50x100 building that I rent part of. Its a little rough, but for the price of $100/mo. Im not complainging. The whole building is actually wired with romex in conduit. Here is my space.
