I am retrofitting my shop lights and would like to use a 3 way switch. Unfortunately, only a 2 wire is supplied and there is no way to run 3 wire from the switch to the lights.
Power to switch....to lights.....to switch is the configuration I need.
I am running 3 wire through the bank of lights anyway(all i have on hand)and have read that you can use 2 wire for this application. Is this possible....and is it legal in BC?
Thanks

You cannot use 2-wire. Its not physically possible.

You need 3-wire from the first switch to the fixtures. This is because you need 2 wires for travellers and 1 wire for neutral.

You instead can use wireless 3-way switches.

The important thing is that you need two wires between the two switches. They connect the two switches to each other and can go nowhere else.

Probably too many options to explain on a board like this. Let's just look at one example for fun.

Let's assume you have power to the existing switch and we are going to use that power. Somehow, you need to do the following:
1. connect two conductors between the two three way switches. They can connect to nothing else.
2. Connect the new 3 way switch to the lights power with one conductor.
3. Connect a "neutral" conductor to the lights. Regardless of the route it takes, it must make it back to the breaker box neutral terminal block.

that's just an example. Clearly you already have neutral to the lights, but you could consider cannibalizing that wire depending on what you have access to.

Just replace the switch with Lutron Caseta and add the 2nd switch as the wireless Caseta.

Good question! Never tried before- I keep my second one on the table so my lazy *** doesnt have to get up ( they do make a wall mount so it looks like a regular switch). I just tried it from my bedroom through 3 walls and it worked- but my house is small. Not very scientific, sorry.

There's two walls between the two switches.....signal strength?
And thanks:)

Shouldn't be a problem in a home. Might be an issue in a commercial building with block walls or more obstacles. They work really well!
