Electrical Panel whole house surge protectors?

What do you guys think of these? Are they worth it and do they work? I see a lot of different kinds and not sure which to get. Some are circuit breaker mounted and some are remote mounted. Some say to mount at the top of the panel and some don't say anything. Looking for a little help.
Came home and one of my led garage lights (furthest in the chain) no longer works, my 6 month old garage door opener no longer powers on and it appears that one of my still pretty new led tv's crapped out to. Looking for something to give me a little piece of mind

They do work. Where it is mounted in the panel does not matter, so long as you do not extend the wires from the device at all. Shortening the wires helps when possible.

Thanks! What should I be looking for in these? The prices range from $50 up to $250

Something with status LEDs so you know if it is working.
Something listed to UL 1449 3rd or 4th edition (NOT older).
If you want one that goes in your panel in a breaker slot, you'll need something from the manufacturer of your panel (this makes things easier in a flush mounted panel). If you're just connecting it to a breaker, then that's not necessary.
A Type I or II SPD is acceptable downstream from a breaker. Type III should not be in your panel.
