Electrical Pendants

Does anyone run overhead electrical boxes with drops for power in there shop? I'm tired of extension cords running all over the shop floor.

We had them at work and they worked well. I think they make some special woven metal strain relief for hanging cable

Yep,one of the places I worked at in San Diego Ca. had air,115 VAC,230 VAC all on pendants.

Yes, in my old shop had one mounted just under my work bench making a permenent 6' extension cord. Cord grips with a strain relief is what I use, a bit pricy but work great. Plan on having em in my new shop as well. Just waiting for the rockers to get off ther *** and finish my house and garage/shop. Been four weeks and they only have part of the second coat of mud on.

If the proper support grip is used, and proper connector used a overhead drop will be quite useful, Hubbell/Kellums is one source for support grips.

I'm familiar with the mechanics involved. We use kellems grips at the office for a number of purposes. I guess my main question is where would you hang them? Obviously they need to hang within reach, maybe 8' or so? If so, do you simply plug the tool you need into them, or do you use a short extension cord to give you enough range to work?

Everything in my shop is on wheels so in that case how do you decide where to hang them?

I would hang them high enough so the average person does not get hit in the head, but still low enough to be able to reach it.

Once you have insalled them the question of whether or not to use an extension cord is a non issue. It is portable cordage, temporary, easily changed. Change the set up as needed.

What about a retractable reel?

I have a couple that drop to light stands. I fussed and move them till it got just right. While its all on wheels do you need to move every piece every time? My Bud somewhat does this, has a 12 ga reel and runs most everything portable from that. If you are on a table saw the hanging cord is about as much of a problem as one on the floor. I had to pipe thru the floor to my fab bench due to this, it was a reel problem. I can reach back and get air but the electric grinder remaining plugged in and out of the way under bench was a problem.

I prefer to make as many of the hookups fixed as I can, probably not a big fdeal but anything plugged is grounded.

I used to use a work light on a retractable reel that had a plug on the handle. I hardly ever used it so I took it down and gave it to a buddy. My garage is only 20x30 and I only use 1 or 2 extension cords at a time, so it's not a big deal. Plenty of wall outlets where the stationary tools are.
