Electrical Questions...

Ok, So I am a little bit of a newbie on electrical stuff.

DOn't get me wrong, I know enough to wire up a fixture and would feel comfortabel running wire etc, but do not really have a grasp of the finer details, how many outlets / fixtures on a circuit etc.

SO, I am starting to plan out wiring up my garage, its an attacehd 20X 10.

Currently teh garage has what appears to be one circuit, one wire coming into an outlet. That wire continues on to a switch that controls two light fixtures (single bulbs). There are 2 other outlets that appear to be on that same circuit.

The garage is not finished, so all the wire is visable, except where it comes out of the house to the first outlet.

Neither of the outlets are controlled by the switch.

I assume that this is a dedicated circuit form the breaker panel (but will confirm).

My plan is to wire in a least 4 light fixtures, and aproximatly 8 outlets.

I would alos like to add a 220v outlet for a future welder or compressor.

I am guessing this will be WAY to much draw for on circuit / breaker.

I have room on the panel to run another circuit, but not sure I want to run wiring from one side of the house to the other, (all finished, with no easy atic access).

Are they any other options???

If u want a 240v(220v hasnt been around for decades!)outlet, then your gonna have to run a 2 or 3 conductor w/ ground wire back to the main panel(or a suitable sub panel! IMO, I would run a large gauge feeder wire back to your main and install a sub panel in the garage. If its too hard to run the wire through the house, then your other options are underground conduit, direct bury wire or surface mounted conduit ran alongside the house, which may be ugly!

It sounds like your best solution is to run one feed to a small sub-panel in the garage. That way all your garage circuits can be wired from the sub-panel. Is there a crawl space under the house?

That is the way I am leaning.

I do have a crawl space. I can get from the panel to the crawlspace, but not sure I can get to the garage without tearing out some drywall.

I am not in that big of a hurry, so I can give it soem thought and plan ahead.

Drywall is actually pretty easy to repair if you cut it just where you need to get access to the wires. I see it done in new home construction all the time, when the drywall is up and then some genius figures out that something was left out.

Don't let that slow you down.

Haha I agree...althougth the wife may not!!!

It is not the drywall that will slow me down, its the lack of funds! That and I have a few other priorities.

Drywall is actually very cheap to work with and you only need basic hand tools.
