Electrical quote for converting my 60amp service

ok, i'll try to make this short.... I'm building my garage in the backyard and i'm needing electricity to it soon, my house has 60amp service and i need to upgrade it to 200amp with breakers instead of fuses only problem is i didn't put that into the budget to do this year. i figured i'd run a separate 200amp line to the garage and tie into it later on down the road. According to the Mid-american dude, that didn't seem like a good idea lol.

Well the i called a local electrician and he quoted me approx. $1000 to add weatherhead conduit from outside, covert my 60amp to 200amp with 2 100amp breakers (1 for house, 1 for garage) and breaker box with breakers. Basically i come home from work and its all done. Does this sound acceptable?

I don't know the cost of living in I-Owe-A but I think it sounds like a pretty darned good price to me.

I assume this includes a new service drop from the PoCo? That usually comes free from the Power Company and I assume your electrician will take care of getting new lines run to your house from the nearest transformer (?).

yeah thats correct, new service drop is free from power company, i thought it seemed reasonable also but i wasn't sure.

That sounds pretty darned good to me. I was getting prices of $3-4K for putting in JUST the services from the meter and minimum install to pass electrical inspection, on new construction for my shop (2 quantity 200Amp services).

I just finished wiring my external garage, with a 100Amp subpanel. In retrospect, I'd gladly pay someone $1000 to do that.

I did something very similiar about 10 years ago. Bids were $3-4000. Did it myself, but bet I spent nearly $1000 on supplies and wire.

If the work is reasonable quality, this is a fair price, depending on what you are getting.

I don't understand the TWO 100 amp breakers. I would think you would replace the old 60 amp fuse panel with a 200 amp breaker panel, and from this you would put one 100 amp breaker and subfeed to the garage.

It sorta sounds like he is going to put in a new mast/weatherhead, meter socket, and a box with two 100 amp service disconnects, one to the house, and one to the garage, and leave your existing fuse panel in the house. THIS would cost about $1000, its not that much work.

Replacing the old 60 amp panel is much more work, as he has to provide a new breaker panel in the house, and the wires never reach, so everything gets spliced or a new wire run to the first existing junction in each circuit, and the studs are never spaced right and he has to add bracing and such for the panel, and on and on. THIS would cost the $3K to $4K everyone else is taking about.

I don't think any of the garage wiring is included in this $1000 quote that Ksths2 is citing.
