Electrical Subpanel - Run to Workshop Shed

Hello,

I have an older home built in the 70s, 3-wire

-MAIN SERVICE / PANEL in home is 100AMP

-From MAIN PANEL a SUB PANEL 60AMP is in attached garage being fed with 6AL

-From SUB PANEL there is a 220 20AMP BREAKER feeding an exterior shed workshop, direct burial cable, that feeds an old glass fuse setup panel

My question is: I would like to replace the glass fuse panel setup and put in a breaker panel in the SHED workshop. What is the max I can run from my current 60 AMP SUB PANEL in the attached garage? This will dictate the activities I run out in the workshop, the 60 AMP SUB PANEL in the garage is overkill, as there is no welder, or main large circuits, etc, running on it (just overhead LED lights, garage door opener, etc).

Current Plan (please provide advise / recommendation):

1) Run 6/3 from current SUB PANEL in garage (40 or 50 AMP Breaker?) to garage exterior wall where a junction box will be placed
2) Junction box will convert 6/3 to individual 6 gauge wires THWN or THWN-2? (two hot, 1 neutral)
3) Individual wires will run in 1 1/2" PVC conduit, 18" of cover, estimate 25' run
4) Run wires up and into shed, inside conduit, into a new panel
5) Drive ground rod (one or two? - 6' apart?? with #8 copper for ground??)

Let me know if I am along the right track,

So the 60AMP breaker in the MAIN PANEL should become a 50AMP that feeds the SUBPANEL in the ATT GAR.

From the ATT GAR, could I send 40 AMP to the WORKSHOP SHED?

In step 2 - you also need a ground wire.
