Electrical Switch, Disable Timer

Does one exist? I'm wiring a smoke detector in the garage, but want the ability to disable it for 30-60 minutes. The timer would be perfect, so that it's not forgotten about and left off.

I've looked and seen timers that shut off after a certain amount of time. Just haven't seen one that does the opposite.

Thanks.

I thought it was not advised to use smoke detectors in a garage, simply because of nuisance alarms.

But to answer your question. You probably could use a N.C. relay off of the timer.

I agree. However our neighbor's house just burned down due to a battery charger being left on overnight. It has me a bit overly-cautious while I'm in the process of finishing the garage.

Why not just install a heat sensor? Then you don't have to worry about it tripping accidently.

Won't that catch it too late, as opposed to the smoke detector catching a fire in the smoking / potentially less "hot" stage .. ?

What you want is a rate-of-rise temperature sensor, it will detect a rapid increase in the temp as a result of a fire.

Can you put in an exhaust fan that runs off the normal timer switch? What do you think your nuisance "false smoke" will be?

It's a bike shop, so running bikes in the garage essentially.

You really should install a carbon monoxide alarm. Every time I run one of my bikes in the shop, the CO detector goes off and the smoke alarm does not. That reminds me that I'm doing something stupid and it's time to open a door.

I think an effective exhaust system is the way to go.

Oh yeah, absolutely. I wouldn't run a bike without the doors open in any situation, but yeah - a CO detector for sure.

I like the exhaust system idea, but this is still a garage and with doors open, I'm not sure that might not be a little overkill.
