What is a good book to learn how to do electrical wiring for either a home or automobile??

This is one category I know nothing about.....and my wife knows alot about hahahaa I cant let her know something about cars that I dont

So what is a good reference book to buy? Preferably something that is in regular circulation and readily available at any Borders or Barnes and Noble and places like that

Usually books about car audio will have a chapter about wiring. Not sure if this is what you are looking for or not.

Try this site: 'the12volt.com". They've got basic info, and also some suggested reading....

Good luck, just remember it's the amps, not the volts, that kill people........and under the right circumstances, it doesn't take much!!!

Dink,

I bought four books for my garage project and surprisingly I needed all four. Each one didn't have all the answers or some had easier to understand drawings/descriptions. I don't have the names in front of me but they were all the same "size". Glossy, softcover, about 1/2" thick all color, lots of pics/drawings.

I figured that spending $50 on books is much cheaper than $4,000 in electrical contractor costs. BUT then I had a friend check my work! I got an A+ on that "exam"

later,

I will second the B&D book. Got mine at Home Cheapo. It was a good reference when I installed my flourescent lighting, 20-amp outlet circuit, and 220v compressor. Had an electrician friend double-check my work before I made the final connection to the new breakers...no problems.

I just bought "Wiring Simplified. 41st Edition" from Amazon.com. It's based on the 2005 National Electric Code.

Pretty good so far. I'm learning a lot.

Right, wiring for AC power and auto are 2 different things, no one book will do. Read,, then go to DIY.com or self help and more and ask specifics. You will not get it all from reading. Even when you think you understand you may not, those sites have people that are experts with DIY questions.

I also just picked this up too. Great book so far.

The Home Depot books are pretty good from what I've read. I haven't bought one yet. I just go to HD when I have a question and treat it as a library.
The B&D books look pretty good too from what I've read in bookstores.

The Absolute Best Garage Wiring Book-

Practical Electrical Wiring Published by McGraw-Hill
Herbert P. Richter
W. Creighton Schwan

This is probably the best book ever written on wiring for residencial, farm and light commercial. It was first written 50 or more years ago and is updated every time the NEC changes. It's not a cheap book, but it's the only one you'll need.
The current author-W.Creighton Schwan writes for several electrical trade magazines and is highly respected by those in the trade. I got my first copy while in trade school-I think it is a better book than the texts we used in school.

Haynes puts out a really good automotive electrical manual. You can get it at most any parts house. As far as home wiring, you will need alot of books to cover it well. The home depot books are ok for lights and outlets but much more than that and you will be at a loss. :lol_hitti
