Hi I have a compressor rated electric motor on my air compressor. The HP on the tag says SPL. What HP would that be? This motor also slows down under load and pops the breaker. Thermal breaker that is. Have checked the capacitors (start and run) and they checked good.

It means they inflated the HP numbers.

you need to look at the FLA on the nameplate then correspond that to NEC T430.248

post a pic of the nameplate

Special Horsepower Ratings are less reliable the old “Detroit Horsepower” ratings of days gone bye.

How old is the motor? It's possible the run capacitor is going bad. Of course the problem could be on the pump side as well.
