I'm sure we all have a couple of rolls of cheap PVC "electricians" tape laying around. They are okay for somethings, but I find that the adhesive does not hold up very long, especially if you stretch the tape when you install it.

I found Scotch 2242 Linerless Electrical Rubber Tape works much better, but boy is it pricey !

3M/Scotch makes many different electrical tapes. What do professional use, day to day and for special application ?

Scotch Super 33+ and 130c Linerless tape. A few others too, it really depends on what application its being used for. None of that 10 rolls for a dollar bullcrap tho.

Are either of these without the sticky?

I noticed the main wireing harnesses on my Ford are wrapped with some black tape that has no sticky side.

This is rubber sealing tape. A little diiferent then standard PVC electrical tape. The rubber tape is self sealing/bonding, typically used in high voltage applications on let say burndy split bolt connectors on service feeds. And yes it is more expensive.

You can buy "wiring harness tape" which is the stuff you describe. It is currently listed on ebay as "Black Non-Adhesive Vinyl Wiring Harness Tape".

I used some of this to make a harness for my Ford pickup. You have to use an adhesive tape to finish out the ends, since this tape will unravel otherwise.

I agree...buy the expensive electrical tape...do you really want to risk a short/fire? I even use this on the tip of my rivet gun for solid rivets...keeps the rivet gun from wearing off the coating on solid aluminum rivets.

i really wish i had seen this thread sooner , i just used a boat load of electrical tape on a motorcycle harness  i would have really loved to use the no glue type had i known it was available ...

the glue on the electrical tape makes a mess if you need to do any type of repair or custom wiring down the road and on a stunt bike thats a foregone conclusion ..

Use "friction" (cloth) tape to terminate.

The non-adhesive harness tape is re-useable if you are careful when you remove it.

All the types mentioned make a real mess if they come in contact with a solvent - ie gasoline, WD40, etc. Some just become a sticky mess over time anyway.

I got a whole lot of 3M stuff cheap (like $1 a roll) and noticed they had numbers...anyone know what is good for what application?

IIRC, I got "33", 8-something, and one other I can't remember.....

Super 33+ is top of the line electrical tape. Not cheap but worth the price IMHO. If you go on the 3M website they have tons of info on all their tapes.

The tape Ford used on my truck in 97 blows. It's like hockey tape.

Thanks. I need to replace some wireing on my Ford PU and I will probably try to use that. Couldn't find it locally.

Super 33+ is a great all around tape for splicing and insulating - it's the tape we sell the most rolls of - it's .007 thick. Super 88 is slightly thicker at .0085 and suited for harsh conditions - i.e. cold weather adhesion. Temflex 1700 is the economy tape that contractors buy when they know their men will be careless and wasteful with it - as it is much cheaper - still .007 thick, but less adhesive power and a lower grade plastic - also used on fish tapes as a previous poster stated. If you compared all 3 side by side, you can see and feel the difference. A good quality tape will have a "springiness" to it when you stretch it - and you can feel the difference in the adhesive power and thickness. You get what you pay for.

Scotch 70 self fusing tape, I believe is the stuff. Couldn't find any locally (easily) but I found some other silicone self fusing tape marketed as a repair tape that I re-wrapped the harness in my Porsche with. The silicone tape is good to a high temperature too.

NO !

It is non-adhesive harness tape

Let me Google that for you !

Usually the cloth adhesive impregnated tape is only used at splice points or to "finish" a harness tape or flex tubing run. That stuff stays sticky forever !
