I bought a 601-J at an auction several years ago. I've used it quite a bit and it seems to function really well.
Does anyone have a history with Electro Mechano and the quality of their products?
This drill press doesn't have a rack and pinion table raising option. Anyone have an idea how to raise and lower the table easily?

We're going to need pics, I have an Electro Mechano drill press, but it's a tiny little thing, no problem lifting the table.

Wow, that thing is way cool, never saw anything like it. Might check the big Craftsman drill press thread, they don't usually have a table lifter and I'm sure someone has rigged something up. Is yours single phase or 3 phase? Does it have a variable speed motor, or is it a gear head? Oh, and welcome to GJ.

Hopefully you can see the air spring that I added to my drill press table. It balances it a lot so that moving the table only requires a small effort.

Originally, it was 3 phase 440 but has been converted to single phase 120. I saw it on an auction sale bill which listed it as variable speed. That is why I wanted it.
I got it home and discovered it also had a back gear for low speed operation! The top lever operates the variable speed and the lower round knob moves it form direct drive to back gear.
It seems to be well built. Any information on the drill press or the Electro-Mechano company would be appreciated.

That's a real beauty and great score! It would look awesome all cleaned up. Gear drive DP's are uncommon and pricey when you find them.

Can't help with the id but have you thought of a simple pulley and counter weight to balance the table?

Bl00, would you be able to send me copies of your manuals as well? I just bought of these bench top 601J's and I can't wait to get it up and running. Really nice machine.

Really appreciate your time,

Jason

That is a fantastic drill press. We had a bench model with that style head with a large T-slot table at my last job. The variable speed was wonderful and I am always keeping my eye out for one to have at home. They are kind of hard to find. Ours was a counter-weighted adjustable head with a fixed table. Up/down adjustments were a one handed affair. Really nice unit you have there.

As I recall, they make (or made) a lot of small, very high speed sensitive drill presses for delicate work.

I have seen one three or four head gang table full size unit as well. That would have been a very cool one to have if I had the room for it.

Hello, I served my machinist appreciation at electro mechano from 1983 - 1987. I worked there right out if high school June of 1981 till June of 1987 when I finished my apprenticeship.
