Electrolysis tank question

Just tried this for the first time yesterday to remove rust from some old clamps, but I have one question. Do I need to continue to add washing soda to the tank or is the original amount enough?

You shouldn't have to add more washing soda IF you put enough in to begin with. The process should be creating small bubbles - like soda fizz only much gentler. If you don't see any bubbles there could be one or more of several problems - not enough washing soda, poor conductivity between the battery charger and either the anode or cathode, and/or too low of a current through the piece. Also make sure your piece that you are de-rusting is clean - not clean as in no rust, but clean as in no grease or other coating of crud that would prevent the electrolyte from getting to the rusty metal.

Thanks Jon...there was still activity in the tank, so all should be good. I wasn't sure if after several hours the washing soda was ineffective. Thanks for the help!

First try upping the voltage, then adding more washing soda. If that don't work, clean your electrical connections.

The washing soda doesn't evaporate. Water does. Adding more water from time to time is expected, but the washing soda is once and done. If your reaction slows down, it is always electrical connections and anode build up. Try wire brushing your anode occasionally.

I have refilled the water several times as it evaporates.
I have yet to need to add more washing sods
