I’ve been looking for a used Ellis drill press for awhile to replace my variable speed Powermatic that spins faster than I like for drilling steel. Wasn’t too keen on dropping almost $3800 (with chuck) on a new one though. I just bought a large plate of 1” steel from a guy on Craigslist, and when picking it up, noticed he had an Ellis drill press sitting in the shop. Mentioned in passing that I’d be interested in it if he ever wanted to sell. Got a text from him several days later asking if I’d be interested in it for $600.
Brought it home, spent several hours doing a deep clean on it, and she’s all ready to go. Seems like a way nicer machine than my old Powermatic. It utilizes a 2hp 3-phase motor controlled by the VFD unit (part of the control panel) which is fed by 1-phase 110 volt power. Interesting thing is, it kept tripping my 20 amp GFCI protected circuit. Found the Ellis manual online, and it specifically says it cannot be run on a GFCI protected circuit. Swapped out the GFCI outlet, and it works great now.
