Ellis Acre dream shop ( AKA Badger hole)

Hello all,
Been lurking and asking a few questions over the last year or so. After moving around the country for a number of years, me and the wife finally decided to put down roots and purchase a small piece of land in Northern IL last fall. I have been waiting for years to buy something to be able to put up a pole barn/shop up to work on the vehicles I have accumulated over the last few years. When we bought the property I thought I had the perfect place to put a 30x48 building up without having to cut down trees. Turns out the septic lines ran a lot further over than we thought so that area will not work. The unfortunate thing about my property is that the original spot is about the most level space we have. However I wasn't going to let a little slope and some trees get in the way of me building my shop. Since I had to move the building from my original space, I had a lot more room to build. With that problem to deal with whats a guy to do but to go bigger. I ended up ordering a 36x56 from Zenz buildings. The plan is to put the building up in Aug but I thought I would start my thread now since the is plenty of work to do prior to the building going up. So the adventure starts and I look forward to your comments and ideas along the way.

First things first is to cut down some trees and trim back a hedge row.The driveway will go from the South to the North to the door of the building will face the south Pic 2. As you can see in the pics the dirt work will be extensive and really ate into my budget ( or I would have went bigger LOL).

Well finally got the dirt work started today. Should finish up on Monday. Took a lot more fill than we expected. While its cute into my budgeting the end it has to be done right.

Well got the build started yesterday Day one was productive even though it rained most the day. I also found the design of the post for the truss very interesting. These guys move fast.

Well after day 4 they started putting metal. So far this builder is great to work with. The quality of his building is excellent and you can tell he cares about the customer. If any of you are looking for a builder in Northern Il check out Jim Zenz at Zenz building.

Well day 5 is over and they almost have the metal completed with the exception of trim work. Should be completed with the inside work by next Fri. We now have a name for the shop. The wife has named it the badge hole. I kinda like it so its stuck.

Got behind a week or so. So the building is finished and Garage door has been installed. Started moving dirt back around the building. While I didn't plan on it I am going to build a wall around the side and back of the building in the future. But that what happens when you don't have a flat lot. Not sure if anyone is looking to move forward soon but my builder told me material prices are up 50% since we placed our contract. :eyecrazy::eye crazy:. So next on my list is digging trenches for electric, WIFI and Coax. Hopefully Ill be starting to move gravel in next week. Before I forget I went ahead and did the gutters as well went with 6 in which I hope is enough in the end.

rBurke65, I am sure I will I have been waiting for a long time to do this. I still have a long way to go to finish it up but hopefully I'll be able to work through the winter to be finished ( For the most part by next spring. Anything you would have done differently now that you are done?

Wannabelikemike,
The door is 16 by 12 insulated with a side mount door opener. The its rolled up its about 6 in away from the ceiling. I wanted 13 foot but for the extra cost it just didn't make sense to go with it.

thetastelingers,
Below are my current toys. Of course I always have plans for more. I had the 49 since I was 13 yrs old and bought the car a couple of years ago. While its not old it has a few bolt ons that make it a lot of fun to play with.

Been slow getting things done, Got the trench and electrical put in but pulled it out because I made the mistake of getting a 12 slot box. I switched it out for a 30 slot but didn't take pics. Gas and roughed in plumbing should be done next week. Then moving on to concrete prep and install.

Well I am about a month behind where I thought I would be when this project started. First I put in a couple of circuits for poor and added some temp lights. Finally got the Plumbing to pass inspection ( First time doing plumbing and learned a lot in the process). Got the gas in the same week and started prep work for concrete. I know I am going to hear that is over kill on the steel but the way the ground had to be built up it seemed like the right thing to do to be on the safe side.

Got the first half of the concrete poured on sat. Will do the other half next sat. The contractor doing it did an excellent job so far and I am very happy. I am looking forward to having the building completely closed in for the winter. I can then work on getting some heat and start on the loft and office space. Should keep me busy most the winter.

Got the rest of the concrete poured and got some stuff moved in. Man it seems like forever since I started this project. Now hopefully I can get some heat in before old man winter decides to show up here in Northern IL. Lots more to do but it has been adventure so far.

This build is looking good. I might have missed it, but I don't recall seeing the interior height of the structure listed. How much headroom will you have inside the enclosed office space, and over the loft above it?

Slim,
The total height is 14 ft. The height of the loft is 8 ft giving me 7 1/2 ceiling height. The that leaves me a almost 6 ft up top. Im a short guy so I can walk around up there no problem, LOL.

You're making great progress, and the framing for the interior office and loft above looks super solid. I could be mistaken, but the pictures seem to indicate that heavy duty carriage bolts and nuts were used to pass completely through the joists and hanging hardware. At any rate, it's looking damn near bomb-proof to me!

Well I got almost all my electrical completed. All in total I have about 30 20 amp outlets and 6 15 amp outlets. I am almost finished with the lighting and while I think it looks sloppy it will give off plenty of light for a couple years. Started putting up some plywood on the walls and built one of at least 2 work benches. All and all its starting to come together.

Been awhile since I have posted on here. Got a lot done over the winter. I have it useable now and will wait to do much more until the prices of lumber come down. But I am very happy with how its coming out. The first pic are of my office and cigar lounge. The other is the finished product for now. I can't believe that I got this much done over the last year.
