Ellis Drill Press 9400 replacement VFD

Im looking at a used Ellis 9400 DP w/ what being called "busted circuit board"

This is a excellent DP otherwise in pretty good shape. The question:

_ besides doing a direct factory replacement of the VFD through Ellis ( I have inquired and awaiting a response from them)

what is a good alternative VFD unit that I would use for this application? I believe its a 110v motor, getting confirmation.

Choose 110V or 220V
60 Hertz
6.8 Amp
S1 Duty
Induction B Grade

Have the specs off the motor plate in hand and call Automation Direct. They will take care of you.

I just completely re-wired my shear and they had me up and running for under $200.

That’s a standard Mitsubishi VFD. I can’t make out the model number in the bottom left corner but it is there. No need for “Ellis factory” parts

Further more the bottom housing with the switches cover the connection blocks. Nearly any brand of appropriate size vfd will functionally work. The physical size could affect how it mounts and how the covers fit.

What I need is:

110v or 220v 1ph to 220v 3ph - I would have to run a new 220v line over to the drill press tho
2hp motor

Ellis wants $600 for a new unit, not terrible markup considering those units go for $450-550 without programming


However I would be open to switching to a different brand. I would want to get something with a proven track record and good instructions. I havent done much 3ph work (none), and would like some support system.

looking up that part no. = 220V. The 2hp is another giveaway, as 1.5hp is the max max limit for 110V, with 1hp being the somewhat standard upper limit for 110V 1ph > 3ph

The 3 phase part is easy. Three hots on three terminals and a ground wire. If it’s not spinning the way you want switch any two of the three and it’s reversed.

All the name brand VFD have ok instructions. What your doing is pretty basic stuff and with the booklet you can change the parameters you want to program the motor nameplate specs in and how you want the forward/rev and accel/decel parameters.

I have used all in my day job that paulsomio link to wolf automation and they are all decent vfds. I personally own the telco and ac lenze

Does the motor have a spec plate on it? I question if it is really 2 HP as you wouldn't be able to run a real 2 HP motor on 110 volt, 20 amp outlet. Does the motor actually draw 6+ amps?

Thanks Firebrick. So for your money you would be looking at Teco and AC lenze?
