so after looking at everyone elses shops and garages here, I hate to show these but maybe some of you guys will get a kick out of it. When we moved to the new house, I was so happy to have a detached, 2 car garage since the house we sold had a one car, attached garage which also housed the furnace and oil tank. Little did I know that:
a) my wife would want to use some of it as storage
b) my wife expeceted to park her car on one side
c) my wife (im seeing a pattern here...lol) stores our fire woosd on one side during the winter to keep it dry! (also preventing her from parking on that side..lol)

So, I am stuck, yet again, in a tiny space and just a "Path" to walk into the garage and to my bench. so, heres my mess.

Nice huh?

Stored turning blanks under Table saw to dry...Sigh.

I'd get those blanks outside in a shed or something. That's valuable Real Estate inside that garage, hate to lose space to something like storing wood until its dry. But that's just me.

Mm

I will bet you know where "everything" is located. I too have a stash of wood awaiting it's turn on the lathe or to be run through the band saw. Looks like you are having lots of fun in your garage/shop.

Ody.

Doesn't look too bad, it's still functional. My dad's basement shop is like that, he doesn't even have a garage! As long as you know where things are, that's good.

Nah man, its not THAT bad. It looks like you really use it, and use up every last bit of space. All I have been concentrating on is getting everything off the floor in my garage - and that has helped immensely.

You need a wood shed (build out of old packing crates and pallets)...and a storage shed for your wife.

Then a carport for her to park in. Garage real estate is too valuable for those things. :p

BTW: Welcome to the forum. My garage looked worse until recently and I have no one to blame except me.

Oh yeah, wood shed would serve a dual purpose - to dry your woodworking wood and to keep the firewood dry. Well, it made sense in my head before I wrote it, but you know what I mean.

I think you need more closed wall cabinets to:
- Hide the "mess". That will give a big visual impact.
- Prevent dust and sawdust from getting on all your tools.
- Give you more efficient use of your walls.

It's not that bad though. It makes a great where's Waldo picture!

as mentioned, there is a lot going on in there but its not as bad as first glance. its one of those (3) beer garages, at first you're like "whoa", then after a few beers its looking kind of good:lol_hitti

organization is key, thats my words i try to speak to myself and others(but mostly a personal reminder to myself even when directed at others), several times a day at least. im constantly having to move things to move things, just to get to things to move/use them.

imo, get a shed for that drying wood first. that will take care of your project wood AND her firewood. you will clear out half of your garage by getting a small wood shed.

Zacker01 are you on LumberJocks? If not you should be.

Your place looks great, you would be suprised what a minor tune up of the place will get you. Take the shed advice.

Then post up some picks of the bowls you have made.

my wife, would be told to find a DIFFERENT PLACE to store her ****
my wife, would feel lucky to have her car in MY garage.
my wife, knows that the house is hers and the garage is mine...stay out!
my wife, is very understanding of my personal space...though she may not agree
my wife, would say the wood should be stacked along the fence with a Tarp over it keeping the spiders AWAY from the house and out of MY GARAGE!

Looks like a garage that is well used. I like that Jet Bandsaw..

Thanks... Yeah funny story about that, I was looking and looking for months for one but I was just looking for an affordable 14"er. Then I found an ad on the local Craigs List for this one and an older 18" Delta. $250.00 and $200.00 so I called and talked to the guy, turns out these were at the yale school of drama, they used them for making props and backgrounds and such. nyhow, I was gonna buy the delta for $150.00 cause it had a fried motor, but when I saw it, i was like No way.. it had to be almost 8 feet tall and waigh 900LBS..lol so I asked if hed take $200.00 for the jet 18" and he said yes. Man,, the delta was old, huge and ugly!! lol

lol Mine too, untill she gets home...lol I already told her, the house is yours, do what you want, paint it what ever colors, hag your flowery curtains... whatever but, I think she thinks that since the garage came with the house, it should be hers too....lol Im actually considering moving the wood working operations to the basement and using the garage for metal / steel work thats becoming my newest obsession.:D

Yeah I have been contracted by the boss to make a sort on wood shed for all the firewood I have outside.. But alot of the reason for this mess was this was in the dead of winter and although it was pretty mild this year, it still got cold out there...lol so i wasnt gonna spend anymore time in it that needed...lol so things didnt get put away properly all the time. This whole thread has actually made me go out there and start rearange the place a little the last couple of nights, its looking pretty clean. little by little im encroching on "Her" side too, moved the generator over there, my Photography lights, the power hack saw... next will be the ladders...lol Bwaaahaaahaaa...

One of the problems with GJ is you see all these "designer" garages and you can easily get the impression that if yours doesn't look like that then you are somehow deficient.

You are not deficient in any way.

There's no manual to life, there's no rules, really - especially about garage organization. If it works for you, great. If you are happy with it, great. I'd rather have somebody work in a garage like yours and teach a kid or two about how to make things, than have a Taj Mahal with floors you could eat off of and a complete complement of polished Snap on tools that have never get a speck of grease on them.

Ultimately - at least in my mind anyway, the garage is a means to the end, not the end.

Ditto, boss; happiness comes from within.

I can understand your attitude towards what you have come to see as disorganization. The fact is we are all working on a budget (big or small) and likely limited time. You do what makes you happy.

I personally see allot of tools and material in a very small space. It may not look super clean and polished but it looks like the guy who inhabits it enjoys it. I struggle with the same thing. If I didn't use my garage so heavily and in such a diverse way it would look allot better, but as stated above its a means to and end. I'm not passionate about the garage unless it's functional. It's like a show car vs. street car. I have vehicles that I don't drive and some that I do. I was young and dumb when I built show cars, their bring me no enjoyment once the build is done.

Ah yes, I remember fondly the day the Mrs walked in the front door and said, "Honey, my remote for the garage door isn't working."

^^. Nice, it took my wife 3 years to get used to the idea of parking outside. I told her when we got married that I wanted to move to the country, build a huge garage and live in our motorhome inside until we could pay for the house. I don't use credit, it's just my way. But instead we ended up in a subdivision, she got her way. That's what I get for marrying a city girl I guess. I had my priorities straight. So now we have a three car garage that her car doesn't fit in.... Still bitter.

I grew up in the country and own 5 different vehicles, and a small fleet of atv's, snowmobiles, and other off road toys. They all stay at my parents house because this tiny city garage barely holds my tools. I'm the only guy on the block with an compressor let alone the rest of my tools. I have a 100 Ton iron worker in their and most of my neighbors walk buy wondering what it is. Im like a service station, everyone stips buy so i can fill up their tires. I can't believe they have not thrown me out of this place yet. I'm the only one on the bock that doesn't park my cars in the garage....

I also decided to get a few chickens this year. If the wife won't go to the country I'm bringing country to here. Sooner or later something is going to give. I can't stand this city lifestyle.

Uhm, I that is not an embarrassing garage, in fact it looks real familiar to me, only more organized than mine.

I stumbled on this site looking for a few ideas for organizing my shop. I was going to say reorganizing but that would mean it was organized at one time. I have since discovered many wonderful Ideas and plans to incorporate into the organization effort. But I have diagnosed the root of the problem, not enough floorium. I just need about another zillion square feet of space, cause if I could spread out all of the junk my shop would not look so cluttered.

Stay tuned for the Organization of the Dustbin in the very near future.

Ah yes, I remember fondly the day the Mrs walked in the front door and said, "Honey, my remote for the garage door isn't working."

Now THATS Funny!!!

I went by an "Estate" sale on saturday, the guy had a 3 Locker unit he was trying to give away and no one would take it. It was in excellent shape too, the only problem was, being it was a Locker there was no shelves in it, just a coat hook. Still, if I had the room I would have grabbed it and bolted shelving in it. But, no wall space left to put anything like that... One of my problems is, not enough space to organize stuff. Maybe Ill put plywood on the attic floor and shove all the non essentials up there... that would help.
