EMCO MAXIMAT super 11

My lathe hunt continues. One candiadate is a almost unused EMCO Maximat Super 11 ( aren´t they all!) " my husband bought 1982 in Austria new. He made a couple of brass lamps on it , before he passed away"
Milling attachment included , lots of tools.
No pics, the lady selling has none. I am welcome to look it over and try it, but roundtrip is 600 miles.
Does anybody have one or use one. Are they good enough for a rather skilled amateur machinist.
I have made som parts for a RCplane on a smaller EMCO, and that was a real nice machine.
Asking price is $4000.
All knowledgeable feedback MUCH appreciated

I had a smaller version of that pass through my shop some years ago and it was a decent piece of kit. We also had an 11 or 13 in the shop at work and I lusted after that lathe. I consider Emco as a top tier lathe.

Don't own one, but I've seen them and used them!

Provided it's a genuine Austrian built machine they are superb!

They were relatively expensive new, and they didn't sell many in the U.K. because they were competing against domestic machines, and of course a ton of good used stuff at that time!

Emco, as you probably know, started outsourcing and the quality of the outsourced machines was never up there with the originals!

An original machine, if it's as lightly used as claimed, together with the milling attachment, is really quite a find! I'm not up on values in Sweden, but converting that to Pounds Sterling it's sounding in the right area!

Lot of capability for the money! Quick change gearbox, powered leadscrew and cross feed as standard and probably tool room accurate! I've seen a guy skim 1/2 a thou off a bushing with one of these! If I was looking for a lathe I think I'd have to see it!

I've owned a Super 11 (but without the milling head) for about 15 years now. I'm a fairly accomplished machinist; this is not my only lathe, and I've used it to turn relatively small parts to close tolerances. Very happy with the machine overall; for a small lathe it's surprisingly precise and a joy to use - very "nimble" (efficient) in operation.

The only downside is it's one of the more tricky lathes to level for some reason. Could be the light gauge metal of the factory stand. Once done it's fine, of course.

Here in the U.S., $4k for a clean Super 11 with the milling head and tooling would be a very good deal. If it has the taper attachment or the tool post grinder, it's a steal.

Larry, since " I lusted after that lathe", did you manage to take it out on a date. As a starter.

A friend will look it over for a first evaluation and lots of pics. If it is what the seller says it is I will buy it, after I have seen it and tried it out.
Long trip, but an excellent machine, just what I need.

I have a Super 11, that I purchased new in 1984, mine is green in color and is fully tooled. It's been a great machine! The later models are red and are basically the same, but have more safety features and are less square looking. Realize that when new, that you basically got the basic lathe and nothing else. The stand, splash tray, chucks, mill head,etc. were extra.
