Enamel Spray paint gun recommendations –

I’m looking to purchase a gravity feed spray gun.

I will primarily using it to paint household items (cabinet doors, exterior doors, tables, chairs, etc.). I won’t be spraying fine furniture or auto finishes.

I will be spraying enamel with it. I have an older very nice suction spray gun but I had posted questions earlier about it and got back answers that brought back memories of how tough it was to use.

I’ve never used one of the newer gravity feed guns so I’m looking comments/suggestions/recommendations.

I’ve got a “normal” air compressor. Don’t know the CFM’s offhand but it is a good size CM air compressor. The projects I’m working on will allow me to stop and let the compressor “catch” up if needed.

Here are my questions:

1. I’m looking for one that will hold up to a quart of paint (plain old enamel paint – nothing really fancy).
a. Brand Recommendations
b. Size?
c. Stainless steel vs. plastic paint hopper?
d. Comments/Warnings, etc.

2. Price – Medium to high range. Last gun I bought I’ve had about 23 years. I figure this will be my last gun and I’d like it to last.

Thanks.

Just a bump because I'm curious to hear some new recommendations as well. Lets expand just a bit and say alkyd type enamels for metal as well as the enamals for wood as originally asked. Suppose a small stationary compressor as a maximum(13cfm@40,11cfm@90). Thanks, Patrick

Thanks for the bump, let's see who has some opinions after folks get off of work.

PB, we might have to do our own tests.

Perhaps I should have titled this "show us your spray paint guns"

I use a SATA jet 100 B to shoot catalyzed lacquers and enamels. It has stainless steel nozzles for waterbourne materials. The gun is promoted as a primer and filler gun which is the same consistancy as the products you want to spray. I like the metal product containers. Compared to the Devilbiss suction gun I used before this gun ... well there is no comparison.

I have a matching SATA inline air regulator that really helps with setting the gun up.

Be sure to take the gun apart and wash it out each time, just running gun wash or water through it won't clean it out properly.

I also have a small SATA HVLP gun that I use for motorcycle painting and it a nice unit as well.

For small projects, it is pretty hard to beat this impressive little gun. It was about $13 at PAL....HF probably has it too.

The pot is smaller, but holds enough for two coats on the above, and is a snap to clean up. I have a selection of older gravity/suction feed and HVLP guns and this is my fav.
