Enclose existing carport

Hello All. Just new to the forum. I'm looking for some ideas/suggestions you may have. I have just moved to a new (old) house that has a separate garage plus a post and beam style, free standing carport. It's the carport that I would love to get some feedback about. It's about 20 ft X 20 ft, post and beam style. The roof is open and is currently covered with kiwi vines and grape vines. My wife parks her car in the carport but is unhappy with all the debris that falls on the car from the vines and blows in from the sides as there is no protection from any side. I don't want to change the roof to a gable style but would like to prevent "stuff" from falling onto the car. I've looked at bamboo, translucent panels, trellis panels, etc. Even thought of using something like a landscape cloth. I'm not sure about the sides. I'd like to enclose 3 of them and leave the entrance open. We're in a very "green" area with lots of trees and bushes, so something that looks more natural would probably work best. Again I was thinking of bamboo fencing in a 1 inch or small diameter. You can buy it in rolls. We're okay with removing the vines from the roof too. Thanks for your ideas. Bob

You better look into your snow loads first.
Being you're from Canada, it might destroy any flat covering.

I do a fabric over my deck, just need to take it down before the first snow.

Sounds like you need to build a garage

Never seen a carport with an open roof. Kinda defeats the purpose!
The vines and vegetation give the shade.

I gotta say that it sounds more like a pergola than a car port...

You might want to look into using some camoflaged tarps or canvas tarps that have been treated to make them waterproof.. Did that years ago with linseed oil.. You can put the tarps up over hooks from the inside of the structure or use laces or a combination..

Good luck!

Thanks for all your comments. Much appreciated. You're right in that the existing structure is a pergola (much like Mr. N's photo), not a carport. It's just been used as a carport in the past and I want to make it more practical for our weather. We don't normally get snow in Victoria so I'm not too worried about that as it's mostly rain that creates a problem. Still I'm sure the building code here does specify something about snowload. I already have a regular garage on the property so I cannot build another one. That's why I was looking for ideas to "convert" the existing pergola structure into something more weather-proof for the winter time. I can always remove the enclosures once spring starts. If anyone has any more ideas, please send them on. They're all appreciated. And have a wonderful Christmas season too! Bob

Any roof you could build would need a slope or do a commercial rubber flat roof. I would rebuild the pergola with a lean to style roof.
