building a 10x36 lean to the length of garage.
should I use 4x4 posts or 4x6 posts?
do I need to sink the posts into concrete or use post
brackets that embed in concrete and attach to the bottom
of the posts?
thanks to all.

Well I would think it's going to depend on your local construction permits and such. Here at my home they wanted the post holes 48" down, concrete cookie in the base, then packed in dirt. I would go with the 4x6". Good luck.

depends on local codes, local determined frost depth, and the span between posts. also, if your going to bury them and backfill with compacted gravel, I would recommend wrapping them in 6mil poly (vapour barrier) to help reduce friction and reduce frost heave.

so you're saying the post holes don't have to be
completely filled with concrete?
the frost depth here is 36".

sorry to take so long to respond. but yes. our frost depth is 4'6" so you can either auger and use sonneau tubes and cement to that depth, or excavate a hole, rest a concrete slab at the bottom or pour 4" of concrete at the bottom of the hole, then sit a pressure treated post on the concrete wrapped in poly then backfill with native soils (well compacted).

Im currently doing the same for both sides of my 30x40 so adding a 12x40 ft lean-to on each side. Were using 4x6 post 3 foot in thw ground spaced on 8ft centers. 2x8 rafters. Purlins on 3 foot centers and 2x10 footers. Im in mid southern ohio so I have the same building parameters need as you.

For a small lean-to 4X4s should be OK. But you may need to check with your local code. But I would go with a 4x4 or a 6X6. 4X6s would look kind of odd. Right?

:dunno:
