Been looking for a lathe for excavator pins recently. need single phase at my shop and came across this one

Enco 13x40, 220V single phase, comes with 3 chucks and various tooling. He's asking 3600, what do you think?

How big are the excavator pins? What are they made out of? What else do you plan to do with the machine? For comparison, you can get a brand new Precision Matthews lathe for about $9,000. You can get a smaller one for about $3,300. That looks like a decent machine. Price seems a bit high, but could be different in your area.

A new Grizzly, which is pretty much the same thing is $7300. Honestly, he is probably selling it for as much as he paid for it brand new because prices have really jumped in the last few years. They are decent lathes. I have a 12x36 that I bought new 25 years ago (from Harbor Freight!). I wouldn't want anything smaller. But bigger also starts to become an issue when doing tiny parts.

I would jump all over that as it looks in excellent condition. I remember looking at them 30 years ago and IIRC between the lathe and stand they were like $3K.

Does not sound like too bad a deal.
if you can afford the space, look for a bigger lathe. At some point as the lathe gets bigger the price goes down

-Excavator pins? How large? As others have posted what else will you want/need the lathe to do? A 13/40 seems larger than you'll need just for turning pins. Will you need a through-the-spindle hole for shafts? If so the hole size should be a consideration. Have you checked with any of the machine dealers in the area like HGR (Cleveland, Ohio), CW Wood (Cincinnati, Ohio), or FB Marketplace (your local)?

-I'm asking because Enco has never been known for selling good equipment. In the 80's there was an Enco warehouse near me (Chicago) and I perused a lot of their equipment displayed on the floor. It was always of poor quality and considered disposable back then. Perhaps Enco is getting better quality machines from Taiwan now but quality and machine condition should be considered suspect until proven. As someone else posted, the seller is likely pricing this for what he paid for it. Do you know how to check a lathe for condition? Headstock bearings, back/bull gears, feeds, and bed-ways should ALL be checked for condition, noise, excessive wear, and heat.

-You may have single phase electrical but 3 phase machinery can be run with an inexpensive VFD, I've got one on my lathe. You can also find better deals/choices on 3 phase machinery than single phase. If you have more than one machine a RPC can run the whole shop, that's what I have for 5 machines I have. Ask questions if you're not familiar with machinery.

-For just doing the occasional pin I'd shop around or lower the machine size. That's kinda pricey for a single phase Enco lathe IMO. I may be wrong, haven't bought machinery is several years.

That's what I have, just a little newer version. I looked for a while locally for a used machine and at the time nothing was popping up. I finally bought new. In hindsight I wished I had waited longer to get a heavier machine and it's still something I think about from time to time; selling mine and buying something else. I blew up one of the motor starting caps almost right away. Enco refunded me some money and I switched over to a 3-phase motor with a VFD.
I've been pretty happy with what I have - in fact, I made some excavator bushings.

For that money I’d be all over that if it appears to be in decent order. In my area that lathe would be around $5k maybe more, which is why I dropped $6k on a new Precision Matthews.
