All I want to do is add an outlet below this light switch. It is in a large closet and there are no outlets there. The switch controls a light on the ceiling. My basic electrical book does not address extending an end of run switch (loop switch). Can I extend this to create an outlet? Thanks.

Not safely if it is a switch-leg. The switch leg is the hot (black) wire from the light.. When romex is used there will be a white wire (as romex has a white wire) but it should be taped black. So, you won't have a neutral (white) wire in the switch box if it is a switch-leg. Of course, I have seen outlets run off switch-legs when they are run in conduit (w/the conduit functioning as the neutral) but that is very dangerous.

Thanks egdede. Looks like I won't be able to use that switch. Darn. That sure would have made adding an outlet so much easier. I guess even putting in a combo switch/outlet is out of the question?

Unfortunately a combo won't work for the same reason; no white wire, and a conduit/flex neutral connection is dangerous.

If it is conduit you can fish a white wire through it to use as the outlets netural.

This is true, the white would end at the plug, 2 blacks switched. Might have to pull the old out, use it to pull the new through.
