I am planning on installing 24,000 Btu/hr mini split heat pumps in my small house and in my insulated garage. I will have baseboard electric heat and an oil fired furnace in my house for really cold days. I was hoping to take advantage of the tax credit for these, but I cannot find any of that size listed as Energy Star qualified. Consumer Reports says SEER of 16 for split-system (14 for a package system, whatever that is), but all of the ones that I find for sale are SEER 13 to 14. I don't know what they mean by a package system, and I don't know why a split system would be required to have a higher SEER; it would seem that so long as the efficiencies were the same that they should be equivalent.
Any thoughts?
