Engine hoist help

I am trying to pick up my I-4 engine off the floor to put on the stand. It's fairly light and transmission not attached.

I think I need to get a load leveller and some extra chains, which one should I go with?

How do you know what points to attach the chain to..
I don't think it's rocket science just need some tips though.

One thing I am unsure, just bolted the crane together today, is the bottle jack on it supposed to be loose and have some side to side play, because it just sits on a bolt between two steel plate ears.. hole this make sense. I didn't want to tighten it too much because it is supposed to pivot.

I just have a chinese leveler, it works fine. I've used it on big blocks with no trouble.

As for the jack, yes that play is normal.

look for holes in the cyl head or clock to attach the chain to .

when you lift engine in the air you may have to adjust chain to find the center or the wieght to attempt to equal the weight and pick the load up evenly ,

bolt engine stand bracket to engine before you pick it up its way easier to mount and slide it into engine stand then attempt to adjust bracket to engine in the air .

You shouldn't need a load leveler to place a motor on a stand.

Bolt a chain onto the engine and lift it up. Take the adaptor head out of the stand and bolt it to the engine block.

Pick the stand up with your hands and slide it onto the adaptor. Lower the hoist and put the assembly on the floor.

It's about the same thing VC said above. Do you really need a load leveler for this??

look for bolt holes that are going to be strong enough for the weight of the engine. some are for bolting brackets and cannot handle high side load

use short bolts so you dont bend the bolt and risk damaging the threads in the hole

I don't have time to find a local place that have a leveller, so I am just going to Lowes and get some chains made.. 3 or 4 chains should do the trick.

are intake and exhaust manifold holes ok hook onto? I guess I will try to find some that are in the block instead of the aluminum head.

What about the crank pulley bolt?

What Elroy said, except the load leveler is REAL handy when its time to put the motor back the car, tilt it a bit this way or that, line up bolts etc.

hell just use a tow strap and wrap it around stuff. the junkyards do it so it must be ok.
