engine hoist on a truck?

just swapping the arm around so the legs point backwards and bolting it to the 4x4 wood flatbed crossmembers that are bolted to the frame, also thinking of running two safety chains that run from the pivot of the arm, to the frame of the truck roughly. aiming to move some 1k-1500lb boulders to build a rock wall, essentially just a redneck boom wrecker. anyone have any thoughts?

I've strapped an un-modified engine hoist to the back of a truck before with the boom extended and the legs in the shortest position. It worked OK but frankly for moving boulders around I'd just rent a backhoe or excavator.

I mounted my cherry picker to the back of my utility trailer for a purpose like that once. it worked OK. I'm currently modifying it so I can use it with the 3 pt hitch on my tractor. I need to lift a pick-up truck bed off and move it over the lawn to where I'm going to store it. One thing a cherry picker won't do is roll over soft ground.

On my old Flatbed I had a 1000 pound hoist (kind of like a mini engine hoist) that I welded to a 2" trailer hitch receiver. I welded female trailer couplers on rear corner of the bed. It was super handy and removable if not needed or in the way. If I had a flatbed I'd do it again.

I had one of those hoists welded to a jet ski trailer to take them on and off. I'm amazed at how spindly looking they are for what they're rated for. its what makes me think this idea will be more than adequate. I also have a large winch, that will more than likely also be used in this adventure...

lol. i did that to flip my tractor back on it's wheels. dont need to bother with flipping the legs around, they wont be doing anything anyway. couple stout chains or straps secured near the handle going toward the front of the bed is all i needed.

I built one for my dad to mount on his F500 box truck. Built it out or pipe so we could pull it around to load logs into the truck. It worked great greased between the 2 pipes. Made it easy to swing the logs into the truck. Lifted some big logs that way.

Here's my tractor version, tried it out today. I just added some hardware so I could mount it on the 3 point hitch. Worked great, and doing the final raising and lowering with the engine hoist is a lot smoother and controlled than trying to move it with the hydraulics on the tractor. I used it to remove the truck bed in the pic.
